The Calgary Stampeders signed defensive back Brad Muhammad and defensive lineman Alex Tchangam to the practice squad on Tuesday. To make room for them, the Stampeders released offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch and American receiver Jahleel Billingsley.
Brad Muhammad is five foot ten and weighs 189 pounds. The 28-year-old from St. Petersburg, Florida, was on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers practice squad. He was released by Winnipeg on July 18, 2023.
He started the season on the Stampeders’ practice squad but was released on June 3rd. Muhammad made 55 tackles, two interceptions, and one forced fumble in 16 games with the Stampeders in 2022. In 2021, he played for the Ottawa Redblacks with 14 tackles in five games.
Before the CFL, Muhammad signed with the Cedar Rapids River Kings (IFL) but never played a game, and played for the Albany Empire (AFL) in 2019 with 12 tackles, one interception, and two pass breakups in four games. The Empire won ArenaBowl XXXII in the AFL’s final season.
Collegiately, Muhammad played two seasons at Florida International (2013, 2017) with 63 tackles (47 solo, 16 assists), nine pass breakups, four interceptions for 25 yards, one touchdown, and one blocked kick in 20 games for the Panthers. In his final season, Muhammad had 51 tackles, four interceptions, one touchdown, nine pass breakups, and one blocked kick in 13 games for the Panthers. He was named Second Team All-Conference USA in 2017.
Alex Tchangam is six foot three and weighs 245 pounds. The 27-year-old from Douala, Cameroon, signed with the Lions in November 2022. Before the Lions, Tchangam signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2022.
Collegiately, Tchangam played two seasons at Colorado (2018-19) with 24 tackles (23 solo, 1 assist), four tackles for loss, four sacks, one pass breakup, and one forced fumble in 21 games for the Buffalos.
Before Colorado, Tchangam played two seasons at De Anza College in Northern California for two seasons (2016-17) with 71 tackles (52 solo, 19 assists), 25.5 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks in 15 games for the Mountain Lions.
Caleb Benenoch is six foot five and weighs 305 pounds. The 28-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria, but was raised in Katy, Texas, played right tackle in two games for the Stampeders in 2023. This is the second time he was released by Calgary. He signed with the Stampeders on April 5th but was released on May 19th, and later signed back with Calgary on May 21, 2023. Before Calgary, Benenoch attended training camp for the New York Jets in 2022.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Benenoch in the fifth round (148th pick) in the 2015 NFL Draft. He played 35 games, of which 22 were starts in four seasons with Tampa Bay.
Then, he had stints with New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, and Buffalo Bills. Furthermore, he played one regular season game with the New Orleans Saints in 2021.
Collegiately, Benenoch played 36 games in three seasons at right tackle for UCLA (2013-15) including making 35 consecutive starts for the Bruins. In 2015, the offensive lineman surrendered 14 quarterback sacks, the second-lowest total in school history.
In addition, he was named Second Team Freshman All-America by 247 Sports in 2013 and named honorable mention all-conference in 2014.
Jahleel Billingsley is six foot four and weighs 217 pounds. The 22-year-old from Chicago, Illinois, signed with the Stampeders on July 11, 2023, and spent two weeks on the practice squad. Before Calgary, he was drafted by the San Antonio Brahmas in the 2023 XFL Rookie Draft.
Collegiately, Billingsley played three years at Alabama (2019-21) with 37 catches for 559 yards, six touchdowns, and six kick returns for 106 yards in 36 games for the Crimson Tide. He is a member of the 2020 CFP National Championship team.
After Alabama, Billingsley transferred to Texas in 2022 with three catches for 38 yards in four games for the Longhorns. He was a 2022 second-team All-Big 12 Preseason selection by Athlon Sports.
