Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell will undergo surgery for a fractured left leg on Sunday morning according to a report by TSN’s Dave Naylor.
“The Ticats have avoided the worst-case with the injury to QB Bo Levi Mitchell. He suffered a fracture to his lower leg and will undergo surgery Sunday morning. Expectation is he can return following his time on six-game injury list.”
Bo Levi Mitchell made his return on Friday night after missing four weeks with an adductor injury that he suffered in Week 2 against the Toronto Argonauts. The injury occurred with 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter with the Ticats leading the Redblacks 16-13 and pinned on their two-yard line.
Mitchell went for a quarterback sneak to give them some breathing room but was twisted along the way and Jovan Santos-Knox landed on his left leg. Bo Levi Mitchell finished the game completing 23 of 40 passes (58%) for 353 yards, two touchdowns, five interceptions, and two carries for five yards.
Furthermore, Naylor said the quarterback sneak was not the team’s intended play call. “As for the play on which Bo Levi Mitchell was injured, I’m led to believe the expectation on the Ticats sideline was that he would take a knee to end the game. Unclear why that didn’t happen.”
Bo Levi Mitchell is six foot two and weighs 198 pounds. The 33-year-old from Katy, Texas, completed 53 of 97 passes (54.6%) for 711 yards, three touchdowns, nine interceptions, and four carries for 13 yards in three games for the Ticats in 2023.
He has also been sacked ten times for 30 yards. The Ticats acquired Mitchell from the Stampeders in November 2022 for a 2023 third-round pick, a 2024 fourth-round pick, and future considerations, and he later signed a three-year contract extension with the Ticats making $500,000 per season.
Last season in Calgary, Mitchell completed 160 of 261 passes (61.3%) for 2,010 yards, nine touchdowns, six interceptions, and seven carries for 26 yards in 18 games, of which nine were starts. Mitchell became the team’s all-time passing leader in a Week 10 game against the BC Lions. A week later, he was benched for Jake Maier after throwing two interceptions. Mitchell’s last game came in the Western Semi-Final against the B.C. Lions.
Mitchell spent his entire 11-year career in Calgary completing 2,496 of 3,866 passes (64.6%) for 32,541 yards, which set a new franchise record, along with 188 touchdowns, 89 interceptions, 169 carries for 772 yards, and 14 touchdowns in 165 games.
In addition, Mitchell won two Grey Cup championships (2014, 2018), two-time Grey Cup Most Valuable Player, two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player Award, three-time CFL West All-Star (2015, 2016, 2018), and two-time CFL All-Star (2016, 2018).
Collegiately, Mitchell played two seasons at SMU (2008-09) completing 385 of 676 passes (57%) for 4,590 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 33 interceptions in 21 games for the Mustangs. Then, Mitchell transferred to Eastern Washington (2010-11) completing 618 of 1,008 passes (61.3%) for 7,505 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions in 26 games for the Eagles.
He led the Eagles to a come-from-behind win over the Delaware Blue Hens in the 2011 FCS Championship game 20-19 to win the school’s first national championship.
