The Repco Supercars Championship concluded the weekend on Sunday at Sydney Motorsport Park in Eastern Creek, New South Whales, on Sunday afternoon for Race 19 of the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight.
Shan van Gisbergen of Red Bull Ampol Racing started the race on the pole with Andre Heimgartner joining him on the front row. Gisbergen got off to a slow start off the line which handed the lead to Andre Heimgartner. However, Gisbergen would get the lead back on the fourth lap passing Heimgartner at Turn 3.
Meanwhile, Gisbergen pitted on lap 20. Two laps later, Heimgartner passed Anton De Pasquale for third place. By the time the pit cycles ended, Gisbergen regained the lead with his teammate Broc Feeney sitting in second place and Heimgartner closing in on him.
Shortly after, Heimgartner caught up to Feeney and passed him for second place at Turn 6 but trailed van Gisbergen by 3.1 seconds with 13 laps to go. Gisbergen went on to win the race by 5.2 seconds over Heimgartner, and Anton De Pasquale passed Broc Feeney on the final lap to finish in third place.
It was van Gisbergen’s fourth win of the season and the first since Perth in April. The rest of the top ten finishers were Broc Feeney fourth, Bryce Fullwood fifth, Cam Waters sixth, Chaz Mostert seventh, Brodie Kostecki eighth, Mark Winterbottom ninth, and Jack Le Brocq tenth.
During the press conference, van Gisbergen confirmed that if a NASCAR deal comes to fruition, he will head to America next year. However, he does not know at this time if it will be a full ride.
The Repco Supercars Championship returns to action from August 18-20 at The Bend Motorsport Park in Tailem Bend, South Australia.
