Ottawa Redblacks sign three players to the practice squad

The Ottawa Redblacks signed wide receiver Maurice Ffrench, offensive lineman Eric Starczala, and defensive back Tobias Harris to the practice squad on Wednesday.

Maurice Ffrench is five foot eleven and weighs 200 pounds. The 24-year-old from New Brunswick, New Jersey, was released by the Elks last week. He made 15 catches for 190 yards, and one touchdown in four games for the Elks in 2023. Edmonton signed Ffrench as a free agent on November 23, 2022.

Before Edmonton, Ffrench played four seasons at the University of Pittsburgh (2016-19) with 156 catches for 1,637 yards, ten touchdowns, 49 carries for 379 yards, four touchdowns, 27 kick returns for 652 yards, two touchdowns, and 28 punt returns for 164 yards in 46 games for the Panthers. He was named to the All-ACC third team in 2019.

He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2020, making the practice squad, and later signed with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022, playing three games with one catch for three yards.

Eric Starczala is six foot five and weighs 315 pounds. The 26-year-old from Cambridge, Ontario, was on the Redblacks practice squad before he was released on July 13th. He signed with Ottawa on December 12, 2022. Before Ottawa, Starczala was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in the seventh round (62nd pick) in the 2019 CFL Draft from Guelph. Starczala played 17 games in five seasons at Guelph (2015-19) playing right tackle and is a two-time OUA Second-Team All-Star.

Tobias Harris is five foot nine and weighs 187 pounds. The 23-year-old from Pflugerville, Texas, played for Old Dominion in 2022 with 33 tackles (14 solo, 19 assists), two tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, 12 pass breakups, and two punt returns for 36 yards in nine games for the Monarchs.

Harris played four seasons at West Texas A&M (2018-21) with 162 tackles (112 solo, 50 assists), 5.5 tackles for loss, half a sack, 17 interceptions for 323 yards, three touchdowns, 42 pass breakups, one fumble recovery, 61 punt returns for 804 yards, two touchdowns, 53 kick returns for 1,160 yards, and one touchdown in 34 games for the Buffaloes.

He was a First Team All-American, two-time Second Team D2CCA All-Super Region 4, and Second Team All-Lone Star Conference.
