The Philadelphia Flyers signed goaltender Sam Ersson to a two-year contract worth $2.9 million ($1.45 million) through the 2025-26 season on Saturday. The Flyers drafted Ersson in the fifth round (143rd pick) in the 2018 NHL Draft.
Sam Ersson is six foot two and weighs 176 pounds. The 23-year-old from Falun, Sweden, split the 2022-23 season with the Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms. In Philadelphia, Ersson went 6-3 with a 3.07 GAA, .893 save percentage, and one shutout in 12 games.
In Lehigh Valley, Ersson went 24-17-1, with a 2.84 GAA, .900 save percentage, and one shutout in 42 games. In addition, Ersson went 1-2, with a 3.71 GAA, and a .875 save percentage in three playoff games. Ersson has played two seasons for the Phantoms with a 24-20-2 record, a 2.85 GAA, a .899 save percentage, and one shutout in 47 games.
Ersson is ranked sixth among AHL goaltenders in wins and minutes played (2,511) and seventh in games and ranked second among rookie goaltenders in games, wins, minutes played, and saves (1,070).
Before Lehigh Valley, Ersson played three seasons for Brynäs IF (SHL) with a 30-46 record, a 2.93 GAA, a .904 save percentage, and four shutouts in 78 games. In addition, he went 4-1, with a 1.30 GAA, and a .949 save percentage in five SHL playoff games.
In the 2018-19 season, Ersson played for Västerås IK (HockeyAllsvenskan) with a 27-9 record, a 1.95 GAA, a .933 save percentage, and five shutouts in 36 games. In the playoffs, he went 4-1 with a 1.60 GAA and a .938 save percentage in five games. He was named HockeyAllsvenskan Goalie of the Year, and HockeyAllsvenskan Most Valuable Player.
In addition, he represented Sweden in the 2019 World Junior Championships in Canada. He went 3-1, with a 2.23 GAA, and a .922 save percentage in four games.
