The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and assistant head coach & offensive coordinator Tommy Condell agreed to part ways on Monday and senior assistant coach Scott Milanovich will take over play-calling duties.
“This day is quite difficult. Tommy is someone I have known since 2013. He is an exceptional man whose work ethic and creativity are second to none. His history with Hamilton as a Coordinator and development of quarterbacks is undeniably impressive. In 2019, he was able to produce on short notice when he took over as our OC, something very few people in this profession could, helping us offensively to a 15-3 regular season record,” said Orlondo Steinauer, President of Football Operations & Head Coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a statement.
“He has been on our Ticats coaching staff for seven seasons and has been part of four Eastern Division Championship teams. No doubt, Tommy has played a key role in the organization’s development of excellence. We thank him and his family for their great contributions and wish them well in the future.”
Injuries have not helped Hamilton this year as Condell had Bo Levi Mitchell and Matthew Shiltz go down with injuries which led to Taylor Powell being the starting quarterback. The Ticats’ offense is ranked fifth in yards (2,734), seventh in points (160), and tied fifth in touchdowns (15).
Tommy Condell was into his fourth season as the offensive coordinator and added the title of assistant coach in 2022. In addition, he was in his second stint in Hamilton after initially being the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach from 2013 until 2015 when he resigned due to family reasons.
A year later, Condell returned to the CFL as the wide receivers coach for the Toronto Argonauts, winning the Grey Cup in 2017. He was promoted to offensive coordinator but Toronto’s offense struggled to a 4-14 record and was let go.
Condell also was the quarterbacks coach for the Ottawa Renegades in 2004, and the offensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2006.
Scott Milanovich is in his first season in Hamilton after spending two seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the Indianapolis Colts. Before the Colts, Milanovich was the head coach of the Edmonton Elks in 2020 but the season was canceled. He arrived in the CFL in 2003 as the quarterbacks coach for the Calgary Stampeders after holding the same position for the Rhein Fire (NFLE) that same season.
Milanovich spent four seasons in NFL Europe as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the Rhein Fire and Cologne Centurions. In 2007, he was the quarterbacks coach for the Montreal Alouettes and worked his way up to be an assistant head coach along with retaining offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2009-11.
He would then be named the Toronto Argonauts head coach in 2012 and coached the team for four years, winning the Grey Cup in his debut in 2012 and was named CFL Coach of the Year. After the 2016 season, he resigned due to the uncertain future of the Argonauts.
Milanovich would then become the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterbacks coach in 2017 and spent three seasons there. As a coach in the CFL, Milanovich is a three-time Grey Cup champion and won the XFL Championship as a player in 2001 with the Los Angeles Xtreme.
