Edmonton Elks sign three players including RB Mekhai Johnson

The Edmonton Elks signed running back Mekhai Johnson, defensive lineman Daniel Ross, and linebacker Caleb Tannor to the practice squad on Sunday.

Mekhai Johnson is five foot eleven and weighs 201 pounds. The 25-year-old from Dorchester, Massachusetts, rejoins the team after attending training camp earlier this year and played one preseason game against the Calgary Stampeders with five carries for 15 yards, and one catch for eight yards. The Elks released Johnson on May 28th.

Collegiately, Johnson played four seasons at Marist College (2017-19, 2021) with 159 carries for 863 yards, eight touchdowns, 26 catches for 184 yards, two touchdowns, 75 kick returns for 1,786 yards, and two touchdowns in 33 games for the Red Foxes.

In 2022, Johnson transferred to Tusculum University with 100 carries for 635 yards, eight touchdowns, ten catches for 172 yards, one touchdown, and six kick returns for 163 yards in 11 games for the Pioneers.

Daniel Ross is six foot five and weighs 305 pounds. The 30-year-old from Louisville, Kentucky, played five games, of which four were starts for the Elks in 2023 with eight tackles. He is in his second stint in Edmonton after signing with them in 2014 as a 21-year-old.

After Edmonton, Ross signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2016. He played one game before he was released. Then, Ross signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2017. In addition to Houston, he had stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars playing 21 games with 27 tackles (14 solo, 13 assists) and two sacks.

Collegiately, Ross played two seasons at Northeast Mississippi Community College (2012-13) with 71 tackles (38 solo, 33 assists) and 2.5 sacks in 17 games for the Tigers.

Caleb Tannor is six foot three and weighs 220 pounds. The 24-year-old from Stone Mountain, Georgia, signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent and attended rookie minicamp.

Collegiately, Tannor played five seasons at the University of Nebraska (2018-22) with 126 tackles (65 solo, 61 assists), 19 tackles for loss, ten sacks, six pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in 56 games for the Cornhuskers.

In 2022, he was named team captain and finished the season with 43 tackles (25 solo, 18 assists), six tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two pass breakups, and one fumble recovery in 12 games.
