E.J. Warner throws two touchdowns to lead Temple to a win

The Temple Owls (1-0) opened the 2023 college football season on Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field against the Akron Zips (0-1).

Temple had 380 yards on offense. Quarterback E.J. Warner completed 28 of 49 passes (57.1%) for 292 yards, two touchdowns, and one carry for one yard.

Running back Darvon Hubbard led the rushers with ten carries for 35 yards, and Edward Saydee had eight carries for 18 yards, five catches for 37 yards, and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Dante Wright led the receivers with seven catches for 71 yards. Temple’s defense had 52 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, and one pass breakup.

Akron had 279 yards on offense. Quarterback DJ Irons completed 17 of 29 passes (58.6%) for 205 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and eight carries for -7 yards. Running back Drake Anderson had seven carries for 40 yards, and Lorenzo Lingard had seven carries for 24 yards, one catch for 77 yards, and one touchdown.

Akron wide receiver Daniel George had three catches for 60 yards. Akron’s defense had 72 tackles, three tackles for loss, and five pass breakups.
