Penn State opens the 2023 season with a win over West Virginia

The Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0) opened the 2023 college football season at Beaver Stadium on Saturday night against the West Virginia Mountaineers (0-1).

Penn State had 478 yards on offense. Quarterback Drew Allar completed 21 of 29 passes (72.4%) for 325 yards, three touchdowns, and four carries for one year to lead the Nittany Lions to a 38-15 win over the Mountaineers. Running back Nicholas Singleton led the rushers with 13 carries for 70 yards, and one touchdown, and Kaytron Allen had ten carries for 51 yards.

Wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith had four catches for 123 yards, and two touchdowns, and Malik McClain had four catches for 58 yards and one touchdown. Penn State’s defense had 65 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, and two pass breakups.

West Virginia had 308 on offense. Quarterback Garrett Greene completed 16 of 27 passes (59.3%) for 162 yards, 15 carries for 71 yards, and one touchdown.

Running back CJ Donaldson Jr. had 18 carries for 81 yards, and one touchdown, and wide receiver Devin Carter had six catches for 90 yards. West Virginia’s defense had 63 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, and two pass breakups.
