Philadelphia narrowly escapes with a win in New England

The Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) kicked off the 2023 NFL season on Sunday evening at Gillette Stadium against the New England Patriots (0-1) for the 16th time since their first matchup in 1973 which includes two Super Bowl games. The Eagles lead the all-time series 9-7.

Philadelphia got off to a solid start but later cooled off with some questionable play-calling. However, they managed to secure a 25-20 win over the Patriots. Highlights here.

Philadelphia had 251 yards on offense. Quarterback Jalen Hurts completed 22 of 33 passes (66%) for 170 yards, one touchdown, and nine carries for 37 yards. Running back Kenneth Gainwell had 14 carries for 54 yards, and wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith had 14 catches for 126 yards and one touchdown.

Philadelphia’s defense had 77 tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, one touchdown, and seven pass breakups. Philadelphia defensive back Darius Slay made three tackles, three pass breakups, one interception for 70 yards, and one touchdown.

New England had 382 yards on offense. Quarterback Mack Jones completed 35 of 54 passes (64.8%) for 316 yards, three touchdowns, one interception, and two carries for 15 yards. Running back Ezekiel Elliott had seven carries for 29 yards, and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne had six catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns. New England’s defense had 66 tackles, three tackles for loss, three sacks, four pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
