The Calgary Stampeders signed defensive lineman George Obinna and defensive back Malcolm Thompson to the practice squad on Saturday.

George Obinna is six foot two and weighs 251 pounds. The 27-year-old from Tracy, California, played two games for the Stampeders in 2022 with two tackles. He signed with Calgary as a free agent in 2022. Before Calgary, he was on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad in 2021.

Collegiately, Obinna played six seasons at Sacramento State (2014-19) with 136 tackles (70 solo, 66 assists), 47 tackles for loss, 33.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries in 48 games for the Hornets. He is a two-time First Team All-Big Sky (2017, 2019), and earned the team’s Ray Clemons Defensive MVP award in 2019.

Malcolm Thompson is five foot eleven and weighs 200 pounds. The 28-year-old from Windsor, Ontario, had 23 tackles and one fumble recovery in ten games for the Blue Bombers in 2022.

The Calgary Stampeders signed Thompson as an undrafted free agent in 2019. In 2021, he attended training camp for the Stampeders but was released and later signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Thompson played two games making one tackle on special teams against the B.C. Lions.

Thompson played three seasons at Wilfrid Laurier (2016, 2018-19) with 81 tackles (67 solo, 30 assists), seven tackles for loss, two sacks, seven interceptions for 268 yards, two touchdowns, 16 pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, nine punt returns for 56 yards, and one kick return for 27 yards in 24 games for the Golden Hawks.

Thompson helped Wilfrid win the 2016 Men’s Football OUA Champions. He is a two-time OUA Men’s Football Second Team All-Star and an OUA Men’s Football First Team All-Star in 2016.
