The Toronto Argonauts re-signed Special Teams Coach Mickey Donovan to a contract extension on Tuesday.
Mickey Donovan is currently in his second year with the Argonauts under Head Coach Ryan Dinwiddie. Toronto’s special teams have played a major role in the team’s success this season.
Javon Leake leads the league in kick returns with 25 kick returns for 538 yards, 57 punt returns for 917 yards, and three touchdowns. Toronto ranks first league-wide in return touchdowns, field goal percentage, punt return average, kickoff average, and blocked kicks.
“Mickey’s special teams have been a huge positive for us this year, week in and week out,” said head coach Ryan Dinwiddie. “He’s a great coach, a phenomenal motivator, and is able to get the best out of his guys on a daily basis. We’re happy to keep him in Toronto.”
Donovan was a two-time All-Canadian playing linebacker for three seasons for the Concordia Stingers (2002-04). He won the President’s Trophy in his final season at Concordia. After suffering a career-ending knee injury as a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Donovan turned to coaching.
He had stints in New Hampshire, Western, McGill, and Concordia in a span of ten seasons. Then, he made the jump to the CFL becoming the Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach for the Montreal Alouettes for four seasons. In 2022, he was brought in as the Special Teams Coordinator.
