The Edmonton Elks released quarterback Dresser Winn, offensive lineman BJ Wilson, defensive lineman Emeke Egbule, linebacker Mark McLaurin, and defensive back Josh Nurse on Tuesday.
Dresser Winn is six foot three and weighs 215 pounds. The 24-year-old from Dresden, Tennessee, signed with the Elks on September 30, 2023. Before Edmonton, Winn signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He played one preseason game for the Rams against the Denver Broncos completing 3 of 5 passes (60%) for 21 yards.
Collegiately, Winn played six seasons at the University of Tennessee-Martin (2017-22) completing 492 of 814 passes (60%) for 5,800 yards, 37 touchdowns, 24 interceptions, 174 carries for 164 yards, and nine touchdowns.
In addition, Winn punted the ball 26 times for 1,044 yards, with a long of 67 yards, three touchbacks, nine fair catches, eight from inside the 20-yard line, five from 50-plus yards, and one kickoff for 57 yards in 32 games for the Skyhawks. He was named Second Team All-OVC in 2022.
BJ Wilson is six foot six and weighs 320 pounds. The 27-year-old from Florissant, Missouri, signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in May. He became the first player from Quincy University to sign an NFL contract. However, Wilson was released in August.
Collegiately, Wilson played five seasons at Quincy University (2018-22) playing 42 games for the Hawks. He received All-GLVC honors in the last three seasons, including two first-team honors in 2022 and the spring 2021 season. In addition, he helped pave the offense to two top-three finishes in the GLVC for total yards across the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Emeke Egbule is six foot two and weighs 245 pounds. The 26-year-old from Topeka, Kansas, played two games for the Elks in 2023 with one tackle. Before Edmonton, Egbule was drafted by the St. Louis Battlehawks (XFL) in the second round (11th pick) of the 2022 XFL Draft. He never played a game for the Battlehawks.
The Los Angeles Chargers drafted Egbule in the sixth round (200th pick) of the 2019 NFL Draft. He made 13 tackles (9 solo, 4 assists) in 32 games for the Chargers.
Collegiately, Egbule played four seasons at Houston (2015-18) with 164 tackles (98 solo, 66 assists), 13 tackles for loss, five sacks, two interceptions, eight pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and six fumble recoveries in 52 games for the Cougars.
Mark McLaurin is six foot two and weighs 215 pounds. The 26-year-old from Collins, Mississippi, made 41 tackles, two tackles on special teams, and one forced fumble in 11 games for the Elks in 2023. The Elks signed McLaurin as a free agent on August 16, 2022. He played two games in 2022 with seven tackles, five tackles on special teams, and one interception.
Before Edmonton, McLaurin signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2019. In 2021, he played for the Aviators (TSL).
Collegiately, McLaurin played four seasons at Mississippi State (2015-18) with 221 tackles (114 solo, 107 assists), 10 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, eight interceptions for 112 yards, 25 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries in 51 games for the Bulldogs.
In the 2017 TaxSlayer Bowl against Louisville, McLaurin had eleven tackles and three interceptions and was named MVP. In addition, McLaurin was named to the Associated Press All-Bowl Team.
After college, McLaurin attended the New York Giants training camp in 2019 but suffered a broken foot and was placed on injured reserve. The Giants released him in 2020.
Josh Nurse is six foot three and weighs 198 pounds. The 27-year-old from Fayetteville, Georgia, attended training camp with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2022 and the Calgary Stampeders in 2021. Before the CFL, Nurse signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and later played two games for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Collegiately, Nurse played one season at Georgia Military College in 2016 as a wide receiver with one catch for ten yards. Then, Nurse played three seasons at Utah (2017-19) with 34 tackles (27 solo, 7 assists), two tackles for loss, one sack, six pass breakups, one force fumble, and one fumble recovery in 40 games for the Utes.
