The Los Angeles Rams have signed quarterback Carson Wentz on Tuesday according to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero. He will backup starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. In addition, the Rams released quarterback Brett Rypien.
Carson Wentz is six foot five and weighs 237 pounds. The 30-year-old from Bismarck, North Dakota, last played in 2022 with the Washington Commanders completing 172 of 276 passes (62.3%) for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in eight games, of which seven were starts.
The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Wentz in the first round (2nd pick) of the 2016 NFL Draft. He has played seven seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Washington Commanders completing 2,056 of 3,284 passes (62.6%) for 22,129 yards, 151 touchdowns, 66 interceptions, 337 carries for 1,362 yards, 10 touchdowns, and one catch for four yards in 93 games.
In 2017, he suffered a torn ACL injury against the Los Angeles Rams late in the season and backup quarterback Nick Foles led the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII.
After the Super Bowl, Wentz suffered multiple injuries including a back vertebral fracture, concussion, foot, ankle, finger, and bicep strain. Wentz’s play disintegrated over time which led to him getting benched in 2020 against the Green Bay Packers and Jalen Hurts took over the role.
After the 2020 season, Wentz was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021, and then the Colts traded him to the Washington Commanders in 2022. The Commanders released Wentz on February 27, 2023.
Collegiately, Wentz played four seasons at North Dakota State (2012-15) completing 392 of 612 passes (64%) for 5,115 yards, 45 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 216 carries for 1,028 yards, 13 touchdowns, and one catch for 16 yards, and one touchdown in 43 games for the Bisons. He is a five-time FCS Champion (2011-15).
Brett Rypien is six foot two and weighs 202 pounds. The 27-year-old from Spokane, Washington, completed 18 of 38 passes (47.4%) for 172 yards, one interception, and three carries for 19 yards in two games for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. The Rams signed Rypien as a free agent on May 4, 2023.
Before Los Angeles, Rypien signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent on April 27, 2019. Rypien spent three seasons with the Broncos completing 80 of 130 passes (61.5%) for 778 yards, four touchdowns, eight interceptions, and 11 carries for two yards in eight games for the Broncos, of which three were starts.
Collegiately, Rypien played four seasons at Boise State (2015-18) completing 1,036 of 1,618 passes (64%) for 13,581 yards, 90 touchdowns, 29 interceptions, 210 carries for -97 yards, three touchdowns, three catches for 38 yards, and two touchdowns in 50 games for the Broncos.
He is the Mountain West’s all-time leader in passing yards (13,581), completions (1,036), and 300-yard passing games (21). Rypien was a three-time First Team All-MWC (2015-16, 2018), MWC Freshman of the Year (2015), MWC Offensive Player of the Year (2018), and a Second Team All-MWC (2017).
