The CFL suspended Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive back Chris Edwards on Wednesday for three games next season for striking opponents and for his part in inciting a non-football altercation during the fourth quarter for punching Montreal wide receiver Jake Harty on the head in the Eastern Semi-Final last Saturday at Percival Molson Stadium.
Chris Edwards is six foot two and weighs 217 pounds. The 30-year-old from Detroit, Michigan, made 46 tackles, four sacks, one interception, and one touchdown in 18 games for the Ticats in 2023. The Ticats signed Edwards as a free agent on February 17, 2023.
Before Hamilton, Edwards played for the Toronto Argonauts making 37 tackles, two interceptions, two touchdowns, and one forced fumble in 13 games helping them win the Grey Cup in 2022. He played two seasons in Toronto with 75 tackles, three sacks, five interceptions, four touchdowns, and one forced fumble in 27 games.
The Oakland Raiders signed Edwards as an undrafted free agent in 2016 but he was released at the end of training camp. In 2017, Edwards signed with the Edmonton Eskimos.
He played two seasons with the Eskimos (now Elks) with made 66 tackles, four special teams tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one sack in 35 games. In 2019, he signed with the B.C. Lions with 50 tackles, one sack, one interception, and two forced fumbles in 18 games
In 2020, Edwards signed with the San Francisco 49ers. He played one preseason game before being released. In June 2021, Edwards signed with the Toronto Argonauts. In 98 career games, Edwards has 231 tackles, 10 tackles on special teams, 8 sacks, 10 interceptions, 1 touchdown, and 5 forced fumbles.
Collegiately, Edwards played his first two seasons at Grand Rapids Community College (2011-12) with 5 tackles, 2 interceptions, and one pass breakup in four games for the Raiders.
Then, he transferred to Butte Community College in 2013 with 54 tackles (34 solo, 20 assists), 2.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one interception, 10 pass breakups, and one blocked punt in 12 games for the Roadrunners.
Then, Edwards transferred to Idaho (2014-15) with 71 tackles (56 solo, 15 assists), 8 tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions, six pass breakups, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries in 18 games for the Vandals.
The league also fined Hamilton Tiger-Cats wide receiver Omar Bayless, defensive back Carthell Flowers-Lloyd, quarterback Kai Locksley, and defensive linemen Mason Bennett, and Mohamed Diallo for leaving the bench area and engaging opposing players in a non-football altercation. Montreal Alouettes wide receiver Régis Cibasu and running back Jeshrun Antwi were also fined for the same reason.
