Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Nic Marshall was arrested last Thursday in Columbus, Georgia, and is facing a gun charge according to a report by WRBL, a local television station in Georgia.
Nic Marshall, along with 32-year-old Breshay Borders were pulled over on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at 35th Street and River Road where police allegedly found an “automatic handgun that had been modified” in the vehicle.
According to AL.com, Marshall was charged with “possession of a sawed-off shotgun, sawed-off rifle, dangerous weapon, or silencer.” In the state of Georgia, an unlawful possession of a firearm carries a five-year prison sentence. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders released a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “The Roughriders were made aware Sunday night through media reports that Nic Marshall was arrested on a gun possession charge in Georgia. The club is disappointed and taking this matter seriously. We are currently gathering more information.”
Nic Marshall is six foot one and weighs 207 pounds. The 31-year-old from Rochelle, Georgia, made 31 tackles and five interceptions for the Roughriders in 2023. He is scheduled to be a free agent this off-season.
The Roughriders signed Marshall as a free agent on April 24, 2018. He concluded his seventh season in Saskatchewan with 150 tackles, 20 interceptions, and one forced fumble in 77 games. In 2021, Marshall made 30 tackles, three interceptions, and one touchdown in 14 games on his way to being named a CFL All-Star.
Before Saskatchewan, Marshall signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2015 and later went to the New York Jets. Marshall played two seasons in the NFL with 18 tackles (12 solo, 6 assists), one pass breakup, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 25 kick returns for 514 yards, and 11 punt returns for 69 yards in 21 games.
After the NFL, Marshall signed with the Arizona Rattlers (IFL) but left the team shortly before the season began to sign with the Roughriders.
Collegiately, Marshall played one season at Georgia in 2011 as a defensive back with five tackles (2 solo, 3 assists) in 13 games for the Bulldogs before he was kicked off the team for “violation of team rules.” Then, he transferred to Garden City Community College in 2012 as a quarterback. He completed 196 of 343 passes (57.1%) for 3,142 yards, 18 touchdowns, 171 carries for 1,095 yards, and 19 touchdowns in 11 games for the Broncbusters.
Then, Marshall transferred to Auburn (2013-14) with 320 of 532 passes (60.2%) for 4,508 yards, 34 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 325 carries for 1,866 yards, 23 touchdowns, and three catches for 51 yards in 26 games.
Marshall is best remembered in the 2013 Iron Bowl against Alabama throwing a game-tying 38-yard touchdown to Sammie Coats with 32 seconds left that made it 28-28. Then, Auburn’s Chris Davis returned a missed field goal for a game-winning 109-yard touchdown. Auburn won the game 34-28 over the Crimson Tide.
