Alec Butcher and Matt Brown lead the Royals to victory in Maine

Reading's Matthew Brown scored two goals against Maine on Friday night.

The Reading Royals (4-8-1-1) continued their three-game road trip on Friday night from the Cross Insurance Arena against the Maine Mariners (4-8) for the first of two games this weekend.

At 17:09 of the first period, Reading’s Matt Brown put the Royals up 1-0 with assists by Yvan Mongo and Joseph Nardi. The Royals had seven shots on goal and led 1-0 after one period of play.

At 8:10 of the second period, Maine’s Ethan Ritchie tied the game 1-1 with an assist by Ethan Keppen. At 13:19, Reading’s Matt Brown scored his second goal of the game which made it 2-1 Royals with an assist from Yvan Mongo.

At 16:42, Maine’s Gabe Guertler tied the game 2-2 with assists by Jimmy Lambert and Brooklyn Kalmikov. The Royals had 11 shots on goal but the game remained tied 2-2 after two periods.

Four minutes and fifty-six seconds into the third period, Reading’s Alec Butcher put the Royals back up 3-2 with assists from Tyson Fawcett and Mason McCarty. Then, Alec Butcher extended the Royals lead to 4-2 at 11:47 with assists by Brendan Hoffmann and Mason McCarty.

A minute later, Maine’s Gabriel Chicoine cut the Royals lead down to 4-3 with an assist by Tyler Drevitch. The Royals held on to beat the Maine Mariners by the final score of 4-3.

The Royals had 25 shots on goal, committed two penalties for 13 minutes, did not have any power play opportunities, and Nolan Maier made 31 saves off 34 shots.
