The Repco Supercars Championship started the final weekend of the season on Saturday with Race 27 of the VAILO Adelaide 500 from the Adelaide Street Circuit in Adelaide, South Australia.
The championship came down to Brodie Kostecki and Shane van Gisbergen. Kostecki had a 131-point lead heading into Race 27. Shane van Gisbergen needed to finish ahead of Kostecki for a chance to win the championship. However, Kostecki started on the pole while Gisbergen started in sixth place.
The championship was decided on the first lap when Shane van Gisbergen crashed into Will Brown, who tangled with Anton De Pasquale ahead of him which bought out the safety car. With van Gisbergen out, Kostecki needed to finish the race.
On lap 15, Kostecki lost the lead to David Reynolds at Turn 15 and later lost second place to Thomas Randle. Kostecki made his first pit stop on lap 22. Shortly after Kostecki made a pit stop, Thomas Randle pitted on lap 25 and David Reynolds on lap 29. When Reynolds left pit road, he was ahead of Randle.
A lap later, Cam Waters pitted from the lead. Once he left pit road, David Reynolds was the new leader with Randle, Waters, and Kostecki as the top four. Later in the race, Anton De Pasquale, who was caught in a lap 1 accident had steering issues and dropped down to the 21st position.
On lap 37, Cam Waters had a fast car and Thomas Randle let him take the second position at Turn 9. On lap 41, Waters cleared David Reynolds at Turn 7. Reynolds had a steering issue. Seven laps later, Thomas Randle went to pit road and Brodie Kostecki pitted on lap 49, followed by Cam Waters on lap 52.
On lap 52, David Reynolds completed his second pit stop and was side-by-side with Waters for the lead which Reynolds got back. However, Waters would get the lead back when Reynolds soared through the Senna Chicane.
In the back, Chaz Mostert passed Brodie Kostecki and Broc Feeney to move into the fourth position on lap 55. Up front, Cam Waters started to pull away from David Reynolds and would go on to win the race by .6708 seconds. Meanwhile, Brodie Kostecki crossed the finish line in sixth place to win the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship with one race left of the season.
The rest of the top five finishers were Thomas Randle third, Chaz Mostert fourth, and Broc Feeney fifth. Brodie Kostecki was sixth, Will Davison finished seventh, James Courtney came home in eighth place, Andre Heimgartner was ninth, and Scott Pye wrapped up the top ten.
