The Ottawa Redblacks have hired Tommy Condell as the new offensive coordinator on Monday.

The 52-year-old from Utica, New York, spent the last four seasons as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was fired by the Ticats on August 7, 2023.

During his time in Hamilton, Condell helped the Ticats reach the Grey Cup twice in 2019 and 2021. In his first season as the Ticats’ offensive coordinator, Hamilton finished with a 15-3 record. It was his second stint in Hamilton.

Condell made his CFL coaching debut in 1997 as the special teams coordinator for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In 2004, he was the quarterbacks coach for the Ottawa Renegades.

During his time in Ottawa, Condell was the quarterbacks coach, wide receivers coach, and passing game coordinator until 2005 before becoming the offensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2006.

Condell returned to the CFL in 2013 as the Ticats’ offensive coordinator and quarterback coach until 2015. Condell replaces Khari Jones, who was fired by the Redblacks on November 3, 2023.

“Throughout the process of getting to know Bob Dyce, time spent exchanging values and beliefs of all things related to football and beyond, made this the ideal situation for myself and family,” said Condell. “The commitment that is tangibly shown in all areas by the Ottawa Redblacks and OSEG to bringing another Gray Cup championship to this great city was evident early on.”

In 2017, Condell was wide receivers coach for the Toronto Argonauts, winning the 105th Grey Cup over the Calgary Stampeders. In addition to being a wide receivers coach, Condell was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018 but Toronto’s offense struggled to a 4-14 record and was let go.

“We are excited to welcome Tommy and his family to Ottawa. The search process for an offensive coordinator was extensive and throughout it, Tommy’s name kept rising to the up of the list,” said Head Coach Bob Dyce. “Not only were we impressed with Tommy’s history of successful offensive production, but he has a proven ability to win at the professional level and play to the strength of his personnel. He has a track record of coming into teams and improving offenses, especially through explosive plays and red zone success.”

Condell got his coaching career started in 1995 as the running backs coach for the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. In 1996, he was the running back/linebackers coach for the Albany Firebirds (AFL) and the wide receivers coach for the Hamilton Continentals.

Condell would also coach for the McNeese State Cowboys, Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, Louisiana-Monroe Indians, Southeastern Louisiana Lions, and the Cornell Big Red.
