The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced on Tuesday that the team will change its football operations structure which will see Orlondo Steinauer stepping down as the head coach but will continue his role as the Ticats President of Football Operations, and Ed Hervey was named the Ticats’ General Manager. The Ticats will announce their new head coach later this week.
“Hamilton is a special place for me and my family and I’m extremely proud of the sustainable culture and foundation that we have established,” said Steinauer. “In my five years as Head Coach, we’ve had success and accomplished a great deal. Now is the time for me to concentrate on my responsibilities as President of Football Operations and help the incredible people who work here every day as we strive for championships.”
The 50-year-old from Seattle, Washington, coached the Ticats for five seasons leading them to a 39-29 record including five playoff appearances and back-to-back Grey Cup appearances against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2019 and 2021. He was named Coach of the Year in 2019.
In 2019, Steinauer led the Ticats to a perfect 9-0 home record, the first in franchise history. Steinauer was the Ticats’ defensive coordinator from 2013 to 2016 before leaving Hamilton to be a defensive coordinator for the Fresno Bulldogs. After Fresno State, he returned to Hamilton as an assistant coach before getting promoted to head coach in 2019. Before Hamilton, Steinauer was a defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts.
As a player, Steinauer played 12 seasons with the Ottawa Rough Riders, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Toronto Argonauts with 633 tackles (604 solo, 29 assists), 2 sacks, 49 interceptions for 1,178 yards, 5 touchdowns, 6 kick returns for 97 yards, 41 punt returns for 276 yards, 1 touchdown, and 5 missed field goal returns for 86 yards in 184 games.
Steinauer is a three-time Grey Cup champion (1999, 2004, 2012), six-time CFL East All-Star (1998, 2002-04, 2006-07), and a five-time CFL All-Star (1998, 2002-04, 2007).
Ed Hervey joined the Ticats in 2021 as an Assistant General Manager and Senior Advisor to the President of Football Operations. He is a 14-year veteran of CFL front offices. Hervey was the General Manager of the Edmonton Eskimos (2013-16) and the B.C. Lions (2018-19). Hervey helped the Eskimos win the 2015 Grey Cup and made three consecutive division finals after going 4-14 in his first season.

The 50-year-old from Houston, Texas, played eight seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos with 476 catches for 6,715 yards, 43 touchdowns, 3 carries for 17 yards, 1 pass for 52 yards, 2 missed field goal returns for 87 yards, and 24 tackles (12 solo, 12 assists) in 117 games.
He won two Grey Cup titles as a player, a two-time CFL West All-Star (2001, 2003), and a two-time CFL All-Star (2001, 2003). Hervey is one of a handful of players to win both a Grey Cup and a Super Bowl. Hervey won a Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys in 1996.
