Toronto Argonauts re-sign six players including DB Maurice Carnell

The Toronto Argonauts re-signed wide receiver Richard Burton, offensive linemen Dylan Giffen and Edouard Paradis, linebacker Emmanuel Falola, defensive back Maurice Carnell, and kicker Alfredo Gachuz Lozada on Friday.

Richard Burton is six foot and weighs 183 pounds. The 24-year-old from Ottawa, Ontario, attended the Argonauts training camp in 2023. The Argo’s drafted Burton in the sixth round (47th pick) of the 2023 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Burton played five seasons at Queen’s University (2018-23) with 131 catches for 2,016 yards, nine touchdowns, two carries for 12 yards, one kickoff for 47 yards, five kickoff returns for 91 yards, 19 punt returns for 160 yards, and one touchdown in 31 games for the Gaels.

Dylan Giffen is six foot eight and weighs 325 pounds. The 26-year-old from Strathroy, Ontario, played 13 games, of which two were starts for the Argonauts in 2023. The Argonauts drafted Giffen in the third round (28th pick) of the 2020 CFL Draft. In three seasons in Toronto, Giffen has played 26 games, of which four were starts.

Collegiately, Giffen played four seasons at Western Ontario University (2016-19) playing 32 games at left tackle for the Mustangs. In 2017, Giffen helped the Mustangs win the 57th Vanier Cup over the Laval Rouge et Or. He was a two-time First Team OUA All-Star.

Edouard Paradis is six foot four and weighs 320 pounds. The 26-year-old from Levis, Quebec, attended the Argonauts training camp in 2023. The Argonauts drafted Paradis in the fifth round (45th pick) of the 2023 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Paradis played two seasons at New Mexico Military Institute (2018-19) playing eleven games at left guard for the Broncos. He helped the Broncos reach the SWJCFC finals and was named SWJCFC All-Conference Honorable Mention. Then, Paradis transferred to Houston Baptist University (2020-22) playing 21 games playing left guard.

Emmanuel Falola is six foot two and weighs 231 pounds. The 25-year-old from the United Kingdom played one game for the Argonauts in 2023. Before Toronto, he signed with the Prague Lions (ELF) in 2023. The Argonauts drafted Falola in the second round (18th pick) of the 2023 CFL Global Draft.

In 2022, Falola played for the Bristol Aztecs in the Premiership of the British league helping the team make a deep playoff run. In addition, he played for the Kent Exiles, and for Coventry of the University League second division, leading both teams in tackles and guiding Coventry to back-to-back championships in 2018 and 2019.

He was also part of the NFL International Pathway Program, designed to increase the number of non-American and Canadian players in the NFL and to grow the game globally.

Maurice Carnell is five foot ten and weighs 180 pounds. The 29-year-old from San Diego, California, missed the 2023 season due to injury. The Argonauts signed Carnell on August 9, 2022. It was Carnell’s second stint in Toronto after originally signing with them in 2018.

He made 28 tackles, one sack, and four interceptions in nine games for the Argonauts in 2022 helping them win the 109th Grey Cup over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Before Toronto, Carnell signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2019 and played one game.

Collegiately, Carnell played two seasons at Grossmont College (2014-15) in California with 69 tackles (50 solo, 19 assists) and four interceptions in 19 games for the Griffins. He was named First Team All-CCCAA in 2014.

Then, Carnell transferred to Northern Alabama (2016-17) with 64 tackles (53 solo, 11 assists), one tackle for loss, six interceptions for 65 yards, one touchdown, 26 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 23 games for the Lions.

Alfredo Gachuz Lozada is five foot ten and weighs 225 pounds. The 24-year-old from Mexico, played one game for the Argonauts in 2023 against the Saskatchewan Roughriders converting 3 of 4 field goals (75%) with a long of 33 yards and making two of three extra points.

The Argo’s drafted Lozada in the first round (9th pick) in the 2023 CFL Global Draft. He led the league in scoring five times and two-time all-star for the Naucalpan Raptors of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA).
