Matthew Brown’s overtime goal leads to a Royals win in Norfolk

The Reading Royals (8-12-1-1) visited the Norfolk Scope to start a three-game series on Wednesday night against the Norfolk Admirals (14-7-2-1).

At 3:17 of the first period, Reading’s Will Zmolek put the Royals up 1-0 with assists from Tag Bertuzzi and Brayden Guy. Four minutes and forty seconds later, Reading’s Brayden Guy extended the Royals lead to 2-0 with assists from Tyson Fawcett and Will Zmolek.

At 15:29, Norfolk’s Denis Smirnov scored to cut the Royals lead down to 2-1 with assists by Stepan Timofeyev and Carson Musser. Thirty seconds later, Reading’s Brayden Guy scored his second goal of the night to give the Royals a 3-1 lead with assists from Tyson Fawcett and Darren Brady. The Royals had 11 shots on goal to lead 3-1 after one period of play.

At 12:17 of the second period, Norfolk’s Carson Golder cut the Royals lead down to 3-2. Then, at 18:53, Norfolk’s Carson Golder tied the game 3-3 with assists by Stepan Timofeyev and Andrew McLean. The Royals had four shots on goal but the game remained tied 3-3 after two periods of play.

At 11:55 of the third period, Norfolk’s Carson Musser put the Admirals up 4-3 with assists from Josh McDougall and Danny Katic. Then, at 16:08, Reading’s Shane Sellar tied the game 4-4 with assists by Brendan Hoffmann and Will Zmolek. The Royals had three shots on goal but the game remained tied 4-4 heading to overtime.

Two minutes and fifty-three seconds into overtime, Reading’s Matt Brown scored the game-winning goal to give the Royals a 5-4 win over the Admirals with assists by Adam Brubacher and Devon Paliani.

The Royals had 19 shots on goal, committed one penalty, went 0 for on the power play, and Nolan Maier made 10 saves off 14 shots.
