The Montreal Alouettes extended the contracts of Head Coach Jason Maas for three years through the 2026 season and General Manager Danny Maciocia for four years through the 2027 season on Wednesday.
Maas wrapped up his first year as Montreal’s head coach and Maciocia has been the GM for Montreal since 2020. These extensions come after the Alouettes defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28-24 in the 110th Grey Cup in Hamilton last month.
“This is a great day for our organization,” said Alouettes President and CEO Mark Weightman. “I was pleased to work with Danny again when I returned to the Alouettes last March and to know that we will work together for the next years makes me happy. We like the direction our team is taking and this stability will only make us stronger.”
Montreal’s offense finished seventh in offensive points per game (20.6), fourth in touchdowns (43), sixth in average net offensive yards (329.7), fifth in average rushing yards (102.2), sixth in average passing yards (250.0), and eighth in sacks allowed (61).
In the 110th Grey Cup, quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 21 of 26 passes (81%) for 290 yards, three touchdowns, one interception, and two carries for 18 yards. Fajardo threw a game-winning 19-yard touchdown pass to Tyson Philpot. Both Philpot and Fajardo have recently signed extensions with Montreal.
“I am extremely happy to be here for the long haul and to continue our work on a solid foundation,” said Maciocia. “I want to thank our owner Pierre Karl Péladeau and our president Mark Weightman for the opportunity. I like the chemistry within our team and the mentality we have implemented. Knowing that I will continue to work in Montreal with our same pool of players makes me very excited to start the next season.”
Under Maciocia as the GM, the Alouettes are 27-23 in three seasons, finishing second twice in 2022 and 2023 along with three playoff appearances including winning the Grey Cup last month.
Before he was a head coach, Maas had a brief stint with the Baltimore Ravens in 1999 before making the jump to the CFL in 2000. Maas played 11 seasons in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Montreal Alouettes completing 1,256 of 2,055 passes (61.1%) for 17, 126 yards, 81 touchdowns, 64 interceptions, 248 carries for 1,135 yards, and 14 touchdowns in 198 games, of which 61 were starts. He won two Grey Cups as a player and was a two-time named Edmonton’s Most Outstanding Player.
As a coach, Maas was a quarterbacks coach for the Toronto Argonauts (2012-14) winning one Grey Cup in 2012, before becoming the Ottawa Redblacks Offensive Coordinator in 2015. Next, he returned to Edmonton as the Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator from 2016 to 2019 and was the Saskatchewan Roughriders Offensive Coordinator from 2020 through 2022.
