Philadelphia Eagles survive to end a three-game losing streak

The Philadelphia Eagles (11-4) hosted the New York Giants (5-9) on Christmas Day Monday at Lincoln Financial Field. Click here to watch the highlights.

In the first quarter, Philadelphia punt returner Britain Covey returned a punt return for 54 yards before he was pushed out of bounds at the Giants’ 13-yard line. Philadelphia running back D’Andre Swift rushed for a 12-yard gain before they used the “Brotherly Shove” with Jalen Hurts scoring a one-yard touchdown that made it 7-0 with 12:24 left.

For the rest of the first quarter and early second quarter, New York kicker Mason Crosby kicked a 52-yard field goal which made it 7-3 Philadelphia with 8:04 left of the first quarter, and Philadelphia kicker Jake Elliott kicked a 28-yard field goal for a 10-3 lead with 14:53 left of the second quarter.

Later in the second quarter, Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts threw a short middle pass to DeVonta Smith for a 36-yard touchdown which made it 17-3 with 11:44 left. In the final seconds of the second quarter, Philadelphia kicker Jake Elliott kicked a 21-yard field goal which made it 20-3 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Giants took advantage of two Eagles turnovers. On the kickoff, Eagles returner Boston Scott ran into Olamide Zaccheaus causing a fumble recovered by the Giants. Three plays later, New York running back Sequan Barkley scored a 7-yard touchdown cutting the Eagles lead down to 20-10.

Late in the third quarter, Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts attempted to complete a pass to Dallas Goedert but Adoree’ Jackson intercepted it for a 76-yard touchdown. The Giants converted a two-point play which made it 20-18 with nine seconds.

In the fourth quarter, Philadelphia went on an eight-play drive for 75 yards which resulted in a D’Andre Swift 5-yard touchdown run for a 27-18 lead with 11:07. Later, Philadelphia kicker Jake Elliott kicked a 44-yard field goal for a 30-18 lead with 6:04 left in the game.

Less than a minute later, New York quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Darius Slayton which made it 30-25 with 5:22 left in the game. Next, Philadelphia kicker Jake Elliott made his third field goal of the night for 43 yards for a 33-25 lead with 1:10 left of the fourth quarter.

On the final play of the game, New York quarterback Tyrod Taylor’s pass was intercepted by Kelee Ringo and the Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak with a 33-25 win.

Philadelphia had 465 yards on offense. Quarterback Jalen Hurts completed 24 of 38 passes (63.2%) for 301 yards, one touchdown, one interception, eight carries for 34 yards, and one touchdown. Running back D’Andre Swift had 20 carries for 92 yards and one touchdown.

Philadelphia wide receiver A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and tight end Dallas Goedert combined with 17 catches logging 230 yards, and one touchdown. Philadelphia’s defense made 51 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, six quarterback hits, two pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one interception.

New York had 292 yards on offense. Quarterback Tommy DeVito completed 9 of 16 passes (56.3%) for 55 yards, and one carry for five yards. Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor completed 7 of 16 passes (44%) for 133 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and two carries for 21 yards.

New York running back Saquon Barkley had 23 carries for 80 yards, one touchdown, and three catches for four yards. Wide receiver Darius Slayton made three catches for 91 yards, and one touchdown. New York’s defense made 70 tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, three quarterback hits, five pass breakups, one fumble recovery, one interception, and one touchdown.
