Rutgers wins the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl

Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsett scored two touchdowns against Miami in the Pinstripes Bowl on Thursday.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (7-6) played the Miami Hurricanes (7-7) in the 2023 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl from Yankee Stadium on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

In the first quarter, Rutgers went on a 13-play drive for 75 yards which resulted in quarterback Gavin Wimsatt scoring a one-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead with 6:54 left. Rutgers led 7-0 after one-quarter of play.

In the second quarter, quarter, Rutgers linebacker Abram Wright’s interception led to running back Kyle Monangai scoring a seven-yard touchdown for a 14-0 lead with 7:37 left. Late in the second quarter, Miami went on a nine-play drive for 75 yards resulting in quarterback Jacurri Brown running for a seven-yard touchdown cutting Rutgers’s lead down to 14-7 with 3:19 left of the second quarter. Just before the second quarter ended, Miami kicker Andres Borregales made a 35-yard field goal which made it 14-10 Rutgers at halftime.

In the third quarter, Miami went on an eight-play drive for 69 yards when quarterback Jacurri Brown threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Restrepo for a 17-14 lead with 10:33 left.

Later in the third quarter, the Scarlet Knights’ special teams came up with a huge play when Trevor Yeboah-Kodie blocked Dylan Joyce’s punt at the Hurricanes’ 13-yard line which was recovered in the endzone by Timmy Ward for a 24-17 Rutgers lead with 5:06 left. Rutgers led 24-17 with one quarter left to play.

In the fourth quarter, Rutgers went on a six-play drive for 65 yards resulting in quarterback Gavin Wimsatt scoring a one-yard touchdown extending their lead to 31-17 with 11:51 left in the game. Late in the fourth quarter, Miami quarterback Jacurri Brown scored a one-yard touchdown which made it 31-24. The Scarlet Knights won the 2023 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl by the final score of 31-24.

Rutgers had 292 yards on offense. Quarterback Gavin Wimsatt completed 7 of 15 passes (47%) for 84 yards, nine carries for nine yards, and two touchdowns. Running back Kyle Monangai had 25 carries for 163 yards and one touchdown.

Rutgers wide receiver Christian Dremel led the receivers with one catch for 23 yards. Rutgers’s defense made 56 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, and one pass breakup.

Miami had 311 yards on offense. Quarterback Jacurri Brown completed 20 of 31 passes (65%) for 181 yards, one touchdown, one interception, 15 carries for 57 yards, and two touchdowns. Running back Henry Parrish Jr. had 11 carries for 46 yards.

Miami wide receiver Xavier Restrepo made 11 catches for 99 yards, and one touchdown. Miami’s defense made 69 tackles, five tackles for loss, and four pass breakups.
