Edmonton Elks re-sign DB Loucheiz Purifoy and signed WR Charles Headen III

The Edmonton Elks re-signed defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy to a one-year contract extension through the 2024 season and signed wide receiver Charles Headen III on Monday. Purifoy was scheduled to be a free agent next month.

Loucheiz Purifoy is five foot eleven and weighs 190 pounds. The 31-year-old from Cantonment, Florida, made 49 tackles, three interceptions, and two touchdowns in 15 games for the Elks in 2023. The Elks signed Purifoy as a free agent on January 9, 2023.

In 2022, Purifoy made 55 tackles, nine tackles on special teams, one sack, and three interceptions in 18 games for the B.C. Lions. Purifoy was named a CFL All-Star and CFL West All-Star. Before B.C., signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2014. He made seven tackles (6 solo, 1 assist) in 11 games for the Colts. Purifoy would also have a stint with the Seattle Seahawks.

In 2016, Purifoy signed with the B.C. Lions. He played two seasons with 92 tackles, eight tackles on special teams, five sacks, four interceptions, and four forced fumbles in 36 games.

Then, Purifoy signed with the Ottawa Redblacks in 2018. He made 29 tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble in seven games. After he was released by the Redblacks on August 6, 2018, Purifoy signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Purifoy played two and a half seasons in Saskatchewan with 123 tackles, 13 tackles on special teams, two sacks, eight interceptions, and one forced fumble in 40 games.

Collegiately, Purifoy played three seasons at the University of Florida (2011-13) with 102 tackles (69 solo, 33 assists), 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions for 42 yards, one touchdown, 14 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, three blocked kicks, two carries for 23 yards, one catch for five yards, 11 kick returns for 249 yards, and three punt returns for 35 yards in 37 games for the Gators.

Charles Headen III is five foot nine and weighs 198 pounds. The 25-year-old from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, signed with the B.C. Lions on December 7, 2023, but was released on January 4, 2024. Before B.C., Headen III returned 52 kickoffs for 1,143 yards, six touchdowns, two punt returns for 83 yards, and one touchdown in 15 games for the Frisco Fighters (IFL) in 2023. He was named Special Teams Player of the Year in 2023. Before Frisco, Headen signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2022.

Collegiately, Headen played three seasons at Shippensburg University (2017-19) with 80 catches for 909 yards, 14 touchdowns, three carries for seven yards, and 15 kick returns for 273 yards in 34 games for the Raiders. Then, Headen transferred to SMU in 2021 and appeared in two games recording no stats.
