Edmonton Elks sign QB Steven Montez and DL Trevon Mason

The Edmonton Elks signed quarterback Steven Montez and defensive lineman Trevon Mason on Thursday.

Steven Montez is six foot four and weighs 231 pounds. The 27-year-old from El Paso, Texas, completed 1 of 2 passes (50%) for six yards in one game for the Seattle Sea Dragons in 2023 against the D.C. Defenders in the North Division Championship game.

Before Seattle, Montez signed with the Washington Football Team in 2020. He also spent time with the Detroit Lions on two separate occasions.

Collegiately, Montez played four seasons at Colorado (2016-19) completing 824 of 1,321 passes (62%) for 9,710 yards, 63 touchdowns, 33 interceptions, 343 carries for 960 yards, 11 touchdowns, and one catch for 11 yards in 47 games for the Buffaloes.

Trevon Mason is six foot five and weighs 290 pounds. The 25-year-old from Arlington, Texas, made 16 tackles (9 solo, 7 assists), 2.5 sacks, and one interception in ten games for the Houston Roughnecks (XFL) in 2023.

Before Houston, Mason attended the New York Jets rookie minicamp and later signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022.

Collegiately, Mason played two seasons at Navarro College (2017-18) with 49 tackles (33 solo, 16 assists), 12 tackles for loss, four sacks, one fumble recovery, and six pass breakups in 20 games for the Bulldogs.

Then, Mason transferred to Arizona (2019-21) with 106 tackles (56 solo, 50 assists), 15 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and seven pass breakups in 28 games for the Wildcats. He was named an All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention in 2021.
