Calgary Stampeders re-sign four players including RB Dedrick Mills

The Calgary Stampeders re-signed running backs Dedrick Mills and Peyton Logan, and defensive backs Nick Statz and Darius Williams to one-year contract extensions on Friday. Logan and Williams’s announcements were reported by The Canadian Press’s Dan Ralph.

Dedrick Mills is five foot ten and weighs 228 pounds. The 27-year-old from Waycross, Georgia, had 142 carries for 802 yards, four touchdowns, 21 catches for 123 yards, and three kick returns for 55 yards in 15 games for the Stampeders in 2023.

The Stampeders signed Mills as a free agent on January 25, 2022. In 2022, Mills had 67 carries for 459 yards, two touchdowns, and 13 catches for 105 yards in six games. Before Calgary, Mills signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2021.

Collegiately, Mills played one season at Georgia Tech in 2016 with 152 carries for 771 yards, 12 touchdowns, two catches for 13 yards, and one touchdown in nine games for the Yellow Jackets. In the 2017 Gator Bowl, Mills had 31 carries for 169 yards and one touchdown in a 33-18 win over Kentucky. He was named the Gator Bowl MVP.

Next, he transferred to Gardner City Community College in 2017 with 236 carries for 1,358 yards, 19 touchdowns, three catches for five yards, and one touchdown in ten games for the Broncbusters. Then, he transferred to Nebraska (2019-20) with 227 carries for 1,141 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 27 catches for 208 yards in 18 games for the Cornhuskers. He was a Big-Ten Honorable Mention in 2019.

Peyton Logan is five foot eight and weighs 196 pounds. The 25-year-old from Memphis, Tennessee, had 17 carries for 169 yards, one touchdown, one catch for 17 yards, 16 kick returns for 333 yards, and 22 punt returns for 175 yards in six games for the Stampeders in 2023.

The Stampeders signed Logan as a free agent on May 4, 2022. In 2022, Logan had 58 carries for 365 yards, three touchdowns, 18 catches for 192 yards, 25 kick returns for 612 yards, 74 punt returns for 787 yards, one missed field goal return for 122 yards, and one touchdown in 16 games.

Collegiately, Logan played five seasons at the University of Tennessee-Martin (2017-21) with 416 carries for 2,605 yards, 12 touchdowns, 86 catches for 724 yards, four touchdowns, 42 kick returns for 1,067 yards, two touchdowns, and two punt returns for five yards in 51 games for the Skyhawks. He was named First Team All-OVC in 2019, and a three-time Second All-OVC by Phil Steele.

Nick Statz is five foot ten and weighs 186 pounds. The 27-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, made five tackles, two tackles on special teams, and two interceptions in 12 games for the Stampeders in 2023.

The Stampeders drafted Statz in the sixth round (55th pick) in the 2019 CFL Draft. He attended the Stampeders’ training camp but decided to return to the Dinos for his final season. In three seasons in Calgary, Statz has 11 tackles, 17 tackles on special teams, and three interceptions in 35 games.

Collegiately, Statz played five seasons at the University of Calgary (2015-19) with 131 tackles (120 solo, 25 assists), 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, seven interceptions for 70 yards, one touchdown, 29 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, two fumble recovery, ten kick returns for 152 yards, and two punt returns for 54 yards in 48 games for the Dinos.

Darius Williams is five foot eleven and weighs 220 pounds. The 27-year-old from Sacramento, California, made four tackles, and 22 tackles on special teams in 16 games for the Stampeders in 2023. The Stampeders signed Williams as a free agent on June 10, 2022. In 2022, Williams made ten tackles, six tackles for loss, and one sack in nine games. Before Calgary, he signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He initially signed with the Stampeders in 2020 but the season was canceled due to COVID-19. Then, he played for the Sea Lions (TSL) in 2021.

Collegiately, Williams played four seasons at Colorado State-Pueblo (2016-18) with 178 tackles (111 solo, 67 assists), 16.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, 17 interceptions for 364 yards, six touchdowns, and two punt returns for 23 yards in 50 games for the Thunderwolves. He was named First Team All-D2CAA All-American in 2017.
