The Ottawa Redblacks re-signed linebacker Gary Johnson Jr. to a one-year contract extension through the 2024 season on Tuesday.
Gary Johnson Jr. is six foot and weighs 230 pounds. The 27-year-old from Douglas, Alabama, made eight tackles on special teams and one forced fumble in 11 games for the Ottawa Redblacks in 2023. The Redblacks signed Johnson Jr. as a free agent on February 14, 2023.
Before Ottawa, Johnson Jr. signed with the Kanas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He also had a brief stint with the Washington Redskins in 2019. On October 6, 2019, Johnson Jr. signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Johnson Jr. played three seasons in Saskatchewan with nine tackles, 16 tackles on special teams, and one sack in 14 games.
Collegiately, Johnson Jr. played two seasons at Dodge City Community College (2015-16) with 211 tackles (123 solo, 88 assists), 26.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, five interceptions for 125 yards, three touchdowns, 10 pass breakups, seven forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and one kick return for nine yards in 21 games for the Conquistadors. He was a two-time All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College.
Then, Johnson Jr. transferred to Texas (2017-18) with 150 tackles (96 solo, 54 assists), 22.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, two pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in 26 games for the Longhorns.
