The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are set to sign defensive back Jamal Peters on Tuesday according to both 3DownNation’s Justin Dunk and The Canadian Press’s Dan Ralph. The new contract will make Peters the highest-paid defensive back in the CFL.
Jamal Peters is six foot two and weighs 220 pounds. The 27-year-old from Bassfield, Mississippi, made 32 tackles, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles in 13 games for the Toronto Argonauts in 2023.
Before Toronto, Peters signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2019 but was released following an injury settlement on May 14, 2019. Then in 2021, he signed with the Toronto Argonauts and played two seasons with 88 tackles, one sack, seven interceptions for 167 yards, and one touchdown in 23 games.
In 2022, Peters had 57 tackles, one sack, six interceptions for 137 yards, and one touchdown in 15 games, helping the Argo’s win the 2022 Grey Cup and was named a CFL All-Star. Then, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons in January but was released on June 5, 2023.
Collegiately, Peters played four seasons at Mississippi State (2015-18) with 99 tackles (56 solo, 43 assists), 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions for 90 yards, one touchdown, ten pass breakups, and two forced fumbles in 46 games for the Bulldogs.
