Birmingham Stallions make several moves including signing QB Matt Corral

The Birmingham Stallions signed quarterback Matt Corral and linebacker DeMarquis Gates while releasing offensive lineman Cam Carter and running back Zaquandre White on Tuesday.

Matt Corral is six foot two and weighs 205 pounds. The 25-year-old from Ventura, California, completed 28 of 47 passes (59.6%) for 249 yards, one interception, and four carries for 47 yards in three preseason games for the Carolina Panthers in 2023.

The Panthers drafted Corral in the third round (94th pick) of the 2022 NFL Draft. After Carolina, Corral was acquired on waivers by the New England Patriots. 

Collegiately, Corral played four seasons at Ole Miss (2018-21) completing 614 of 912 passes (67%) for 8,287 yards, 57 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, 334 carries for 1,338 yards, 18 touchdowns, and one catch for 19 yards in 37 games for the Rebels. In 2021, Corral won the Conerly Trophy, was named the Outback Bowl MVP, and was named Second Team All-SEC.

DeMarquis Gates is six foot two and weighs 221 pounds. The 27-year-old from Hampton, Georgia, made one tackle (1 solo) in one game for the Chicago Bears in 2023 against the Green Bay Packers. The Bears signed Gates as a free agent on August 6, 2022.

Before Chicago, Gates signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He also had stints with the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings. Then, Gates played for the Memphis Express (AAF) making 72 tackles (53 solo, 19 assists), two fumble recoveries, and five forced fumbles in eight games before the league ceased operations.

In 2020, Gates played four the Houston Roughnecks (XFL) with 32 tackles (25 solo, 7 assists), two sacks, and one interception in five games before the league shutdown due to the pandemic. In 2021, Gates played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders making five tackles and three tackles on special teams.

Next, Gates played for the Birmingham Stallions in 2022 with 62 tackles (43 solo, 19 assists), 11 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and three pass breakups. In the playoffs, Gates made 14 tackles (12 solo, 2 assists), one tackle for loss, half a sack, one interception for 71 yards, one touchdown, and three pass breakups helping the Stallions win the USFL Championship. He was named to the All-USFL Team in 2022.

Collegiately, Gates played four seasons at Ole Miss (2014-17) making 282 tackles (163 solo, 119 assists), 17.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, nine pass breakups, one fumble recovery, and three forced fumbles in 45 games for the Rebels.

Cam Carter is six foot six and weighs 310 pounds. The 26-year-old from Birmingham, Alabama, played nine games for the New Jersey Generals (USFL) in 2023. The Generals signed Carter as a free agent on March 30, 2023.

Collegiately, Carter played four seasons at Murray State (2016-19) making four tackles (3 solo, 1 assist) in 38 games for the Racers.

Zaquandre White is six foot one and weighs 215 pounds. The 25-year-old from Cape Coral, Florida, had 29 carries for 128 yards, two touchdowns, ten catches for 81 yards, one touchdown, and one kick return for 21 yards in five games for the Birmingham Stallions in 2023 helping them win their second USFL Championship.

Before Birmingham, White signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He had six carries for 25 yards, one catch for 19 yards, and one touchdown in three preseason games.

Collegiately, White played two seasons at Florida State (2017-18) with 22 tackles (10 solo, 12 assists), and one kick return for 20 yards in 11 games for the Seminoles. Then, he transferred to South Carolina (2020-21) with 104 carries for 642 yards, two touchdowns, 21 catches for 198 yards, three touchdowns, and two kick returns for 25 yards in 21 games for the Gamecocks.
