The Edmonton Elks signed defensive back Brian Hughes Jr. on Tuesday. Hughes appeared in season three of Last Chance U on Netflix.

Brian Hughes Jr. is six foot three and weighs 195 pounds. The 24-year-old from Richmond Hill, Georgia, wrapped up his collegiate career at Bethel University in Tennessee in 2023 making 84 tackles (42 solo, 42 assists), 6.5 tackles for loss, one interception, and two pass breakups in 13 games for the Wildcats. He was named Second Team All Mid-South Conference.

Before Bethel University, Hughes started his collegiate career at Independence Community College as a linebacker in 2017 making 15 tackles (8 solo, 7 assists) and one fumble recovery in five games for the Pirates helping them win the Jayhawk Conference Championship. Next, Hughes transferred to Victor Valley College in 2019 playing both quarterback, special teams, and defensive back.

He completed 28 of 66 passes (42.4%) for 242 yards, four touchdowns, three interceptions, 60 carries for 375 yards, three touchdowns, one catch for 18 yards, punting the ball nine times for 253 yards (28.1 AVG) with a long of 42 yards, two from inside the 20-yard line, one kick return for 11 yards, 15 tackles (9 solo, 6 assists), one tackle for loss, one interception, and one pass breakup in eight games for the Rams.

After Victor Valley College, Hughes transferred to Kentucky Christian University in 2022 playing defensive back making 57 tackles (27 solo, 30 assists), five tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, two carries for -10 yards, and punted the ball 12 times for 346 yards (28.8 AVG) with a long of 50 yards, and three from inside the 20-yard line in 11 games for the Knights.
