Houston Roughnecks sign three players including DL Toby Johnson

The Houston Roughnecks signed defensive lineman Toby Johnson and defensive backs Corn Elder and Jimmy Moreland on Wednesday.

Toby Johnson is six foot four and weighs 240 pounds. The 32-year-old from Moorehead, Mississippi, was drafted by the Houston Roughnecks in the 2024 UFL Dispersal Draft. In 2023, Johnson made 42 tackles (16 solo, 26 assists), four tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and one pass breakup in ten games for the New Jersey Generals. He was named to his second All-USFL Team in 2023. The Generals drafted Johnson in the 25th round (205th pick) of the 2022 USFL Draft.

Johnson made 35 tackles (22 solo, 13 assists), six tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, and two pass breakups in ten games for the Generals in 2022. In the 2022 USFL North Division Semifinals against the Philadelphia Stars, Johnson made four tackles (1 solo, 3 assists), and half a sack.

Before New Jersey, Johnson signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He also had stints with the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, and Detroit Lions. He played two regular season games for the Vikings in 2016 with two tackles (2 solo) and one quarterback hit.

In 2019, Johnson played for the Massachusetts Pirates (IFL) making 13.5 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, two interceptions, and two pass breakups in nine games.

In 2021, Johnson made 40 tackles (23 solo, 34 assists), 10.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one pass breakup, and three forced fumbles in 16 games for the Pirates helping them win the 2021 IFL United Bowl. He was named First-Team All-Indoor Football League defensive selection.

Collegiately, Johnson played two seasons at Hutchison Community College (2011-12) with 87 tackles (49 solo, 38 assists), 17 tackles for loss, five sacks, nine pass breakups, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and two blocked kicks in 21 games for the Blue Dragons. He led the Blue Dragons to win the Salt City Bowl in 2012 and earned All-American honors.

Then, Johnson transferred to Georgia (2013-14) with 34 tackles (16 solo, 18 assists), 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and two pass breakups in 23 games for the Bulldogs.

Corn Elder is five foot ten and weighs 185 pounds. The 29-year-old from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, made four tackles (3 solo, 1 assist) in three preseason games for the Washington Commanders in 2022 and spent time on the practice squad.

Before Washington, Elder was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the fifth round (152nd pick) of the 2017 NFL Draft. He played three seasons in Carolina with 43 tackles (31 solo, 12 assists), one tackle for loss, three pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 30 games.

In 2021, Elder was signed by the Commanders from Carolina’s practice squad. He made five tackles (5 solo) and one pass breakup in five games.

Collegiately, Elder played four seasons at Miami (FL) (2013-16) with 158 tackles (117 solo, 41 assists), 11.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, three interceptions for 49 yards, one forced fumble, and five fumble recoveries in 49 games for the Hurricanes.

Jimmy Moreland is five foot eleven and weighs 182 pounds. The 29-year-old from Belle Glade, Florida, made 14 tackles (11 solo, 3 assists) and three pass breakups in four preseason games for the New York Jets in 2023.  The Jets signed Moreland as a free agent on September 14, 2022, and spent the season on the practice squad.

Before New York, Moreland was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round (227th pick) of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played two seasons in Washington with 86 tackles (65 solo, 21 assists), two tackles for loss, half a sack, two quarterback hits, one interception for 32 yards, five pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 30 games.

In 2021, Moreland signed with the Houston Texans playing seven games with two tackles (2 solo). Then, Moreland would spend time with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022.

Collegiately, Moreland played five seasons at James Madison University (2014-18) with 208 tackles (125 solo, 83 assists), 12 tackles for loss, two sacks, 18 interceptions for 363 yards, six touchdowns, 63 pass breakups, one forced fumble, six fumble recoveries, six blocked punts, one kick return for 38 yards, and five punt returns for 54 yards in 56 games for the Dukes.

Moreland was a two-time First Team All-CAA, two-time First Team VaSID All-State, First Team All-American, First Team All-American by the Associated Press, AFCA First Team All-American, STATS FCS All-American, and the winner of the Charles Haley Defensive MVP.
