The Calgary Stampeders are set to sign defensive lineman Josiah Coatney on Wednesday per his agent Darren J. Wilson.
Josiah Coatney is six foot four and weighs 325 pounds. The 28-year-old from Douglasville, Georgia, made 19 tackles (7 solo, 12 assists), five tackles for loss, and a half sack in eight games for the Arlington Renegades in 2023. In the playoffs, Coatney made one tackle (1 assist) against the D.C. Defenders as they won the XFL Championship 35-26.
The Renegades drafted Coatney in the second round (14th pick) in Phase 3 of the 2022 XFL Draft. Before Arlington, Coatney signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent on April 30, 2020. He would later spend two seasons on the San Francisco 49ers practice squad.
Collegiately, Coatney played one season at Holmes Community College in 2015 making 46 tackles (23 solo, 23 assists), 8.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, one fumble recovery, one interception for 30 yards, and two blocked punts in nine games for the Dogs.
Then, Coatney played three seasons at Ole Miss (2017-19) with 174 tackles (70 solo, 104 assists), 15.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, one pass breakup, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in 36 games for the Rebels. In 2020, Coatney was in the Reese’s Senior Bowl and was invited to the NFL Combine.
