The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship held the 72nd Mobile 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on Saturday morning at Sebring International Raceway and ended in darkness.
The pole sitters for the race were Whelen Cadillac Racing Cadillac’s Pipo Derani, Jack Aitken, and Tom Blomqvist in GTP. AO Racing ORECA’s PJ Hyett, Paul-Loup Chatin, and Matt Brabham in LMP2. VasserSullivan Lexus’s Jack Hawksworth, Ben Barnicoat, and Kyle Kirkwood in GTD Pro, and Winward Racing Mercedes’s Philip Ellis, Indy Dontje, and Russell Ward in GTD.
There were 13 cars that did not finish the race with 63 full course caution laps. The big crash that took place was Pipo Derani’s No. 31 Whelen Cadillac Racing car attempted to drive around the No. 21 AF Corse Ferrari 296 driven by Simon Mann made contact sending Pipo into the tire barrier and flipped over. Derani walked away under his own power.
After 12 grueling hours, the No. 40 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura’s Louis Deletraz, Colton Herta, and Jordan Taylor won in GTP. The No. 18 Era Motorsport ORECA’s Dwight Merriman, Ryan Dalziel, and Connor Zilisch won in LMP2.
The No. 14 VasserSullivan Lexus’s Jack Hawksworth, Ben Barnicoat, and Kyle Kirkwood won in GTD Pro, and the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes’s Philip Ellis, Indy Dontje, and Russell Ward won in GTD.
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship returns to the streets of Long Beach, California, for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 4:30 pm on USA Network and Peacock featuring the GTP and GTD classes.
