The Calgary Stampeders named Beau Baldwin the new quarterback coach on Monday. Baldwin was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Arizona State in 2023.
The Sun Devils finished 3-9 that season. Arizona State averaged 321.5 yards per game, 111.2 rushing yards per game, 210.33 passing yards per game, and 25 touchdowns. He replaces Ryan Williams, who accepted a position at the University of Georgia on March 2, 2024.
“I’m excited to bring on Beau,” said Stampeders general manager and head coach Dave Dickenson. “He’s had great success working with and developing quarterbacks who have had a lot of success in the CFL and I’m glad he has decided to bring his coaching talents north of the border.”
As a player, Baldwin played four seasons at Central Washington University (1990-93) completing 121 of 197 passes (61.4%) for 1,655 yards, and eight touchdowns in 22 games for the Wildcats. He was named a two-time captain.
In 1991, Baldwin threw 1,052 yards and six touchdowns in nine games, including setting a single-game record against Simon Fraser completing 32 of 52 passes (62%) for 467 yards, one touchdown, and 83 rushing yards in a 38-35 win. He spent his final two seasons as a backup to Jon Kitna. After college, he played professionally for the Limhamn Griffins in the Superserien league in 1994.
In addition, Baldwin began his coaching career at Central Washington in 1994 as a quarterback coach for nine seasons helping the Wildcats go 10-3-1 on their way to winning the NAIA Division II National Championship. before leaving for Eastern Washington as an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach from 2003 until 2006. During those three years, Baldwin helped quarterback Erik Meyer win the Walter Payton Award in 2005. In 2007, Baldwin returned to Central Washington as a head coach guiding the Wildcats to a 10-3 record losing the NCAA Division II Quarterfinal
In 2008, Baldwin returned to Eastern Washington as a head coach where he guided the Eagles to an 85-32 record, 58-14 in conference play winning one FCS National Championship in 2010 when the team was quarterbacked by Bo Levi Mitchell, won five Big Sky Conference Championships, and was named a two-time Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year (2012-13). In addition, quarterbacks Vernon Adams Jr. and Matt Nichols also played for Baldwin.
After nine seasons at Eastern Washington, Baldwin was hired as the offensive coordinator for California of the PAC-12 Conference in 2017. Unfortunately, the Bears’ offensive efficiency ranked as the second worst among all Power Five teams in his second season. He was there for three seasons before becoming a head coach for the Cal Poly Mustangs in 2020. He coached the Mustangs to a 4-21 record before resigning on December 2, 2022.
