Birmingham’s running game leads them to victory in Arlington

The two-time USFL champions Birmingham Stallions (1-0) began their quest for a third straight title on Saturday in the first United Football League game against the defending XFL champion Arlington Renegades (0-1) from Arlington’s Choctaw Stadium.

Birmingham’s offense had 409 yards. Running backs C.J. Marable and Ricky Person Jr. led the way combing 28 carries for 97 yards, two touchdowns, and four catches for 49 yards leading the Stallions to a 27-14 win over the Arlington Renegades.

Birmingham quarterback Matt Corral completed 12 of 21 passes (57.1%) for 201 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and four carries for 25 yards. Corral’s big play came in the second quarter when he threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Deon Cain with three seconds left that tied the game 11-11. In addition, Birmingham quarterback Adrian Martinez completed 2 of 6 passes (33%) for 26 yards, one interception, and three carries for 52 yards.

Birmingham wide receiver Deon Cain led the receivers with three catches for 66 yards, and one touchdown, while Binjimen Victor made two catches for 37 yards. Birmingham’s receivers finished the game with 14 catches for 227 yards and one touchdown.

Birmingham’s defense made 44 tackles led by linebacker Kyahva Tezino six tackles (5 solo, 1 assist), one forced fumble by Carlos Davis, one interception by Mark Gilbert, four pass breakups, and one fumble recovery also by Mark Gilbert. Kicker Chris Blewitt converted 1 of 2 field goals with a long of 27 yards.

Arlington’s offense had 262 yards. Quarterback Luis Perez completed 19 of 28 passes (68%) for 214 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and two carries for six yards. Perez’s big play came in the second quarter when he threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Winstead that had put the Renegades up 11-3 with 9:01 left.

Arlington running back Leddie Brown led the rushers with eight carries for 30 yards. The Renegades finished the game with a total of 18 carries for 59 yards. Wide receiver Deontay Burnett led the receivers with five catches for 36 yards, while tight end Sal Cannella made four catches for 49 yards.

The Arlington receivers finished the game with 19 catches for 214 yards and one touchdown. Arlington’s defense made 64 tackles led by Marquell Lee with nine tackles (6 solo, 3 assists), one sack by Vic Beasley, two interceptions by Darren Evans and Duron Lowe, and six pass breakups.
