The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (1-1) took on the Worcester Red Sox (1-1) in game two of a three-game series on Saturday night from Coca-Cola Park. Lehigh Valley’s Kolby Allard was on the mound against Worcester’s Bran Van Belle.
Kolby Allard got into trouble at the top of the first inning when he gave up a home run to David Hamilton and a sacrifice fly to Romy Gonzalez that put the Red Sox up 2-0. Allard allowed three hits in that inning. He settled down and finished the night pitching five innings allowing four hits, two runs, two walks, and two strikeouts throwing 74 pitches, of which 47 were strikes.
After the first inning, the game remained 2-0 until the bottom of the eighth inning when pitch-hitter Jordan Luplow hit Cam Booser’s cutter for a two-run double to left field tying the game 2-2 with two outs. Scott Kingery was up next but he was called out on strikes.
At the top of the ninth inning, Lehigh Valley pitcher Austin Brice loaded up the bases. Next, he threw a wild pitch which scored Corey Rosier for a 3-2 lead. Next, Nick Sogard drove two more runs home with a single to left field that made it 5-2.
The IronPigs were looking to repeat Friday night’s comeback but it did not happen after two groundouts by Simon Muzziotti and Jose Godoy, and a Cal Peterson strikeout ended the game. The IronPigs lost to the Red Sox by the final score of 5-2.
Lehigh Valley pitcher Austin Brice lost his first game of the year pitching one inning, allowing two hits, three runs, two walks, and one strikeout on 25 pitches, of which 13 were strikes, and the winning pitcher was Worcester’s Cam Booser going two innings, allowing two hits, two runs, and four strikeouts in 36 pitches, of which 27 were strikes.
