Lehigh Valley ends three-game homestand with a loss to Worcester

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (1-2) concluded a three-game homestand on Sunday afternoon against the Worcester Red Sox (2-1) from Coca-Cola Park. Lehigh Valley pitcher David Buchanan was on the mound against Worcester’s Jason Alexander.

After two scoreless innings, Worcester struck first at the top of the third inning when second baseman Romy Gonzalez hit a line drive to center field for a triple scoring two runs for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, Lehigh Valley second baseman Kody Clemens hit Alexander’s slider for a two-run home run over the wall at right field tying the game 2-2.

Lehigh Valley pitcher David Buchanan got into trouble at the top of the fourth inning when Nick Sogard hit his cutter to left field scoring Dalton Guthrie putting Worcester back up 3-2 with two outs. Then, Worcester catcher Nathan Hickey hit Buchanan’s cutter for a two-run home run over the wall at center field extending the Red Sox’s lead to 5-2.

Buchanan finished the game pitching four innings, allowing six hits, five runs, four walks, and two strikeouts throwing 77 pitches, of which 45 were strikes. Moving to the top of the eighth inning, Griff McGarry was pitching for the IronPigs. With one out, McGarry gave up a double to Eddy Alvarez followed by Niko Kavadas’s single to center field scoring Alvarez for a 6-2 lead.

Lehigh Valley went scoreless in the final six innings to lose to the Red Sox by the final score of 6-2. Lehigh Valley pitcher David Buchanan lost his first game of the season, while the win went to Worcester pitcher Justin Hagenman.
