Ottawa Redblacks sign WR Garett Maag and DL Curtis Weaver

The Ottawa Redblacks signed wide receiver Garett Maag and defensive lineman Curtis Weaver while releasing defensive lineman Malcolm Lee and defensive back David Haney on Wednesday according to the CFL Transactions page.

Garett Maag is six foot four and weighs 209 pounds. The 24-year-old from Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2023. Then, Maag signed with the Michigan Panthers (UFL) on October 23, 2023. He was released by the Panthers on March 10, 2024.

Collegiately, Maag played five seasons at North Dakota (2018-22) with 162 catches for 2,152 yards, 18 touchdowns, and four tackles (4 solo) in 49 games for the Fighting Hawks.

Curtis Weaver is six foot two and weighs 265 pounds. The 25-year-old from Long Beach, California, Weaver signed with the Birmingham Stallions (UFL) on October 6, 2023, but was released on March 10, 2024.

Before Birmingham, Weaver was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round (164th pick) of the 2020 NFL Draft. In the same season, the Dolphins traded Weaver to the Cleveland Browns and played one regular season game with one tackle (1 assist). Then, Weaver signed with the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent on January 18, 2023, playing two preseason games with two tackles (1 solo, 1 assist).

Collegiately, Weaver played four seasons at Boise State (2016-19) with 128 tackles (72 solo, 56 assists), 46.5 tackles for loss, 34 sacks, two interceptions for 17 yards, eight pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in 41 games for the Broncos. He is a three-time First Team All-Mountain West and First Team All-American in 2019.

Malcolm Lee is six foot five and weighs 255 pounds. The 25-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, signed with the Ottawa Redblacks on February 27, 2024. Before Ottawa, Lee went undrafted in 2023 and attended rookie minicamps with the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Giants.

Then, Lee was drafted by the Seattle Sea Dragons (XFL) in the 2023 XFL Rookie Draft. However, the Sea Dragons were not included in the XFL and USFL merger which formed the United Football League (UFL).

Collegiately, Lee played two seasons at Iowa Western Community College (2017-18) with 53 tackles (25 solo, 28 assists), 12.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, one fumble recovery, and one pass breakup in 16 games for the Reivers.

Next, he transferred to Kansas (2019-22) with 78 tackles (48 solo, 38 assists), 7.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, one interception for 11 yards, three pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 44 games for the Jayhawks.

David Haney is five foot nine and weighs 185 pounds. The 25-year-old from 29 Palms, California, signed with the Ottawa Redblacks on December 11, 2023. Before Ottawa, Haney made 35 tackles (25 solo, 10 assists), 2.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions for 21 yards, 16 pass breakups, one fumble recovery, and one kick return for 12 yards in eight games for the San Diego Strike Force (IFL) in 2023. After the season, Haney initially signed with the Tucson Sugar Skulls (IFL) before signing with Ottawa.

In 2022, Haney played for the Iowa Barnstormers (IFL) with 44 tackles (36 solo, 8 assists), one tackle for loss, two interceptions for one yard, ten pass breakups, one fumble recovery, and 13 kick returns for 167 yards in nine games. Haney was amongst the league leaders in solo and total tackles, pass breakups, and interceptions.

Collegiately, Haney played one season at San Bernardino Valley College in 2017 with 38 tackles (30 solo, 8 assists), 3.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions for 48 yards, ten pass breakups, three kick returns for 40 yards, and four punt returns for seven yards. in nine games for the Wolverines.

Then, Haney transferred to MidAmerica Nazarene (2018-19) with 54 tackles (47 solo, 7 assists), 3.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions for 41 yards, 14 pass breakups, one blocked punt, and 22 kick returns for 434 yards in 18 games for the Pioneers.
