The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (11-15) visited Polar Park on Wednesday afternoon for game two of a six-game series against the Worchester Red Sox (13-15). Lehigh Valley pitcher Mick Abel (1-1, 5.60 ERA) was on the mound against Worchester’s Grant Gambrell (0-3, 5.04 ERA).
The game was scoreless in the first three innings until the bottom of the fourth inning. Worchester left fielder Corey Rosier hit an RBI double to right field scoring Mark Contreras for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Worcester third baseman Karson Simas hit an RBI ground ball to center field scoring Rosier making it 2-0 Red Sox.
With the bases loaded, Worcester shortstop Chase Meidroth hit a two-run single to left field scoring Simas and Tyler McDonough extending the Red Sox lead to 4-0.
Moving ahead to the top of the sixth inning, Lehigh Valley catcher Aramis Garcia brought Weston Wilson home with a sacrifice fly to center field cutting the Red Sox lead down to 4-1. However, the Red Sox would get the run back in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Niko Kavadas RBI double to left field scoring Jamie Westbrook for a 5-1 lead.
At the top of the ninth inning, Lehigh Valley center fielder Cal Stevenson hit an RBI single to left field scoring Esteban Quiroz cutting Worchester’s lead down to 5-2. The IronPigs lost to the Red Sox by the final score of 5-2.
Lehigh Valley pitcher Mick Abel (4.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K) throwing 87 pitches, of which 47 were strikes lost his second game of the season. The win went to Worcester pitcher Grant Gambrell (6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K) throwing 77 pitches, of which 53 were strikes.
