Birmingham Stallions win a close game over the St. Louis Battlehawks

In a potential UFL Championship Game preview, the Birmingham Stallions (7-0) took on the St. Louis Battlehawks (5-2) from Protective Stadium on Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 14,056 fans. This game came down to the wire with the Stallions beating the Battlehawks 30-26.

Birmingham had 349 yards on offense. Quarterback Adrian Martinez completed 21 of 33 passes (64%) for 230 yards, three touchdowns, and seven carries for 60 yards. In the second quarter, Martinez threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Deon Cain to take a 17-11 lead with 16 seconds left before halftime.

In the fourth quarter, Martinez threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Marlon Williams for a 23-20 lead with 12:20 left in the game and then threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Austin Jr. for a 30-26 lead with 5:23 left in the game.

Running back Ricky Pearson Jr. led the rushers with 10 carries for 42 yards, while C.J. Marable had seven carries for 31 yards, one touchdown, and one catch for nine yards. Marable’s touchdown happened in the first quarter for one yard to take a 6-0 lead with 6:32 left. The rushers finished the afternoon with 26 carries for 144 yards, and one touchdown.

Wide receiver Marlon Williams led the receivers making four catches for 41 yards, and one touchdown, while Deon Cain and Kevin Austin Jr. combined with seven catches logging 88 yards, and two touchdowns. The receivers finished the afternoon making 21 catches for 230 yards, and three touchdowns.

Kicker Ramiz Ahmed made one field goal for 27 yards. Birmingham’s defense made 51 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, and four pass breakups.

St. Louis had 214 yards on offense. Quarterback A.J. McCarron completed 19 of 32 passes (59%) for 161 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and two carries for 24 yards. McCarron’s touchdown happened in the third quarter to Jacob Saylors for 8 yards that put them up 20-17 with 6:17 left.

Running back Jacob Saylors led the rushers with 10 carries for 38 yards, two touchdowns, four catches for 20 yards, and one touchdown. In the second quarter, Saylors scored a one-yard touchdown taking an 11-9 lead with 2:06 left, and in the fourth quarter, Saylors ran for a seven-yard touchdown to take a 26-23 lead with 7:34 left in the games. The rushers finished the afternoon with 15 carries for 64 yards, and two touchdowns.

Wide receiver Hakeem Butler led the receivers making seven catches for 89 yards. The receivers finished the day making 19 catches for 161 yards, and one touchdown.

Kicker Andre Szmyt made two field goals with a long of 61 yards. St. Louis’s defense made 67 tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, four pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
