Calgary Stampeders release three players including LB Lino Schröter

The Calgary Stampeders released wide receiver Dontario Drummond, defensive lineman Terry Beckner Jr., and linebacker Lino Schröter on Saturday. In addition, the Stampeders placed offensive lineman Kyle Saxelid and defensive back Daniel Amoako on the injured list and placed wide receiver Malachi Wideman on the suspended list.

Dontario Drummond is six foot one and weighs 220 pounds. The 26-year-old from Laurel, Mississippi, made five catches for 75 yards in three preseason games for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. The Cowboys signed Drummond as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and spent the season on the practice squad. Then, Drummond signed with the Calgary Stampeders as a free agent on January 31, 2024.

Collegiately, Drummond played one season at East Mississippi Community College in 2018 making 58 catches for 857 yards, and 11 touchdowns in 12 games for the Lions. He was named First Team NJCAA All-American.

Then, he transferred to Ole Miss (2019-21) making 114 catches for 1,633 yards, 15 touchdowns, six carries for 40 yards, one touchdown, completed 2 of 2 passes (100%) for 64 yards, and nine punt returns for 84 yards in 34 games for the Rebels.

Terry Beckner Jr. is six foot four and weighs 305 pounds. The 27-year-old from East St. Louis, Illinois, signed with the Stampeders on February 13, 2024. Before Calgary, Beckner Jr. was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the seventh round (215th pick) in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was on Tampa Bay’s practice squad and later spent the 2020 season on the Chicago Bears practice squad.

Then, the Pittsburgh Maulers signed Beckner Jr. as a free agent on May 6, 2022. He played three games with six tackles (4 solo, 2 assists), one tackle for loss, and one sack. In 2023, Beckner Jr. made 23 tackles (13 solo, 10 assists), two tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles in ten games for the Pittsburgh Maulers in 2023. The Maulers were not included in the USFL and XFL merger that formed the United Football League (UFL).

Collegiately, Beckner Jr. played four seasons at the University of Missouri (2015-18) with 123 tackles (72 solo, 51 assists), 32 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, one interception for 49 yards, five pass breakups, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries in 43 games for the Tigers.

He was named Freshman All-American in 2015, two-time Team Interior Lineman of the Year in 2015 and 2016, and Second Team All-SEC in 2018.

Lino Schröter is six foot two and weighs 225 pounds. The 24-year-old from Troisdorf, Deutschland, re-signed with the Stampeders on April 18, 2024. In 2023, Schröter made one tackle in one preseason game for the Stampeders against the Edmonton Elks in 2023.

After suffering a knee injury, the Stampeders released him on June 3, 2023. Calgary drafted Schröter in the second round (15th pick) of the 2023 CFL Global Draft.

Lino Schröter played high school football at Herington, Kansas, before playing two seasons for the Cologne Crocodiles of the German Football League. In 2021, he made 78 tackles (49 solo, 29 assists), six tackles for loss, two sacks, one pass breakup, two quarterback hits, and one blocked kick in 11 games. He was named Cologne’s Special Teams Player of the Year.

In 2022, he was named to the GFL All-Star Team after making 59 tackles (43 solo, 16 assists), 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, six pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 11 games.

Kyle Saxelid is six foot eight and weighs 320 pounds. The 29-year-old from Elk Grove, California, signed with the Stampeders on May 1, 2024. In 2023, Saxelid played one game for the Ticats after missing the majority of the season with a knee injury.

The Ticats acquired Saxelid, along with linebacker Grant McDonald, and the second overall pick in the 2022 CFL Global Draft from the Edmonton Elks for the 28th pick in the 2022 CFL National Draft, and the ninth overall pick in the 2022 CFL Global Draft. Saxelid played nine games for the Ticats in 2022, of which two were starts.

Before Hamilton, Saxelid played for the Nebraska Danger (IFL) in 2018 before being traded that same year to the Cedar Rapids River Kings. In May 2019, he signed with the Edmonton Elks and played 29 games in two seasons, of which 16 were starts.

Collegiately, Saxelid played four seasons at UNLV (2014-17) playing 48 games, of which 39 were starts for the Rebels. In 2016, he was part of an offensive line that helped the UNLV rushing attack to 241.5 yards per game, which ranked 16th in the nation and was the program’s highest average since 1979.

Daniel Amoako is six foot and weighs 182 pounds. The 25-year-old from Ajax, Ontario, was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in the eighth round (70th pick) of the 2022 CFL Draft. In 2022, Amoako made two tackles and four tackles on special teams in 10 games. In 2023, Amoako missed the season due to an injury.

Collegiately, Amoako played five seasons at York University (2016-21) making 43 tackles (38 solo, 14 assists), one tackle for loss, three interceptions for 24 yards, and seven pass breakups in 30 games for the Lions.

Malachi Wideman is six foot five and weighs 190 pounds. The 22-year-old from Sarasota, Florida, had signed with the San Antonio Brahmas (XFL) before the XFL and USFL merged to become the United Football League (UFL). Then, Wideman signed with the Calgary Stampeders on January 24, 2024.

Collegiately, Wideman played one season at Tennessee in 2020 making one catch for 24 yards in six games for the Volunteers. Then, he transferred to Jackson State University (2021-22) making 37 catches for 589 yards, and 13 touchdowns in 17 games for the Tigers. In 2021, he tied for the SWAC lead in touchdown receptions (12).
