Toronto Argonauts release seven players including WR Zach Peterson

The Toronto Argonauts released wide receivers Zach Peterson and Rajae Johnson, defensive lineman Tyler Williams, and defensive backs Josh Hagerty, Latavious Brini, Daniel Valente, and Jordan Jones. In addition, the Argonauts moved defensive back Jamie Henry on the one-game injured list and placed running back Deandre Torrey on the suspended list.

Zach Peterson is six foot one and weighs 190 pounds. The 24-year-old from Roswell, Georgia, signed with the Toronto Argonauts on May 8, 2024.

Collegiately, Peterson played four seasons at Furman (2018-21) making 16 catches for 251 yards, and one touchdown in 30 games for the Paladins. Then, Peterson transferred to Michigan (2022-23) playing 15 games on special teams and wide receiver recording no stats for the Wolverines.

RaJae’ Johnson is six foot four and weighs 220 pounds. The 25-year-old from St. Louis, Missouri, made one catch for three yards in one game for the Toronto Argonauts in 2023. The Argonauts signed Johnson as a free agent on May 22, 2023.

Collegiately, Johnson played one season at San Mateo College in 2017 with 56 receptions for 1,385 yards and 14 touchdowns in 13 games for the Bulldogs. Then, he transferred to the University of Alabama-Birmingham (2019-21) with 25 receptions for 414 yards and one touchdown in 24 games for the Blazers.

Then, Johnson transferred to Troy in 2022 with 36 receptions for 713 yards, seven touchdowns, and one kick return for 14 yards in 14 games for the Trojans. In addition, he helped the Trojans win the Sun Belt Conference and the Cure Bowl in 2022.

Tyler Williams is six foot two and weighs 295 pounds. The 24-year-old from West Palm Beach, Florida, was on the Argonauts practice squad in 2023. He played one preseason game against the Ottawa Redblacks with three tackles and one pass breakup. The Toronto Argonauts re-signed Williams on December 4, 2023.

Williams played five seasons at Wake Forest (2018-22) with 65 tackles (36 solo, 29 assists), 15 tackles for loss, five sacks, one pass breakup, one forced fumble, and one blocked kick in 44 games. In 2021, Williams made two tackles (1 solo, 1 assist) and one tackle for loss as Wake Forest had a historic 11-win season en route to the ACC Atlantic Division and Gator Bowl titles.

In 2022, Williams made 26 tackles (14 solo, 12 assists), six tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one pass breakup, and one blocked kick in 13 games for the Demon Decans in 2022. Williams helped Wake Forest win back-to-back bowl games with a victory in the 2022 Gasparilla Bowl over Missouri. He had a least one tackle in 12 of 13 games, including eight games of two or more tackles.

Josh Hagerty is six foot three and weighs 200 pounds. The 25-year-old from Regina, Saskatchewan, was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in the sixth round (47th pick) of the 2021 CFL Draft.

In 2023, Hagerty made eight tackles, and one tackle on special teams in three games for the Argonauts in 2023. Hagerty played three seasons in Toronto making 23 tackles, 16 tackles on special teams, and one forced fumble in 17 games.

Collegiately, Hagerty played five seasons at the University of Saskatchewan (2016-20) with 45 tackles (41 solo, 4 assists), four interceptions for nine yards, three pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 22 games for the Huskies. He is a member of the 2018 Hardy Cup championship team, where he made one interception over Calgary 43-18.

Latavious Brini is six foot two and weighs 215 pounds. The 25-year-old from Miami Gardens, Florida, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2023. In 2023, Brini made four tackles (3 solo, 1 assist) in three preseason games for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Toronto Argonauts signed Brini as a free agent on January 8, 2024.

Collegiately, Brini played four seasons at Georgia (2018-21) with 50 tackles (33 solo, 17 assists), six tackles for loss, one interception, and ten pass breakups in 30 games for the Bulldogs. He helped the Bulldogs win the Peach Bowl in 2020.

Then, Brini transferred to Arkansas in 2022 with 55 tackles (32 solo, 23 assists), four tackles for loss, one forced fumble, two pass breakups, and one interception in 13 games for the Razorbacks.

Daniel Valente is five foot eleven and weighs 176 pounds. The 23-year-old from London, Ontario, was drafted by the Redblacks in the fourth round (31st pick) in the 2022 CFL Draft. He spent two seasons on the Redblacks practice squad.

Next, Valente signed with the Montreal Alouettes on August 29, 2023, and was placed on the practice squad. He spent a month in Montreal before being released and later signed with the Toronto Argonauts on October 2, 2023, and finished the season on the practice squad.

Collegiately, Valente played five seasons at Western University (2017-19, 2021-22) with 100 tackles (75 solo, 50 assists), five tackles for loss, nine interceptions for 148 yards, two sacks, and four pass breakups in 35 games for the Mustangs.

Jordan Jones is six foot one and weighs 180 pounds. The 24-year-old from Brooklyn, New York, signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He played three preseason games with 13 tackles (9 solo, 4 assists). The Argonauts signed Jones as a free agent on December 4, 2023.

Collegiately, Jones played two seasons at Nassau Community College (2017-18) with 54 tackles (47 solo, 7 assists) and 11 interceptions for 89 yards in 22 games for the Lions. He was named Junior College All-American in 2017.

Then, Jones transferred to Rhode Island (2019-22) with 81 tackles (59 solo, 22 assists), 1 sack, 9 interceptions for 194 yards, and 2 touchdowns in 29 games for the Rams. He was a First Team All-CAA in 2022.
