The San Antonio Brahmas (7-2) hosted the Birmingham Stallions (8-1) on Saturday afternoon in front of 11,839 fans at the Alamodome. The Stallions came into this game on a 15-game winning streak. On this day, San Antonio not only ended the winning streak but takeover first place in the XFL Conference beating the Stallions 18-9 win with one week to go in the regular season.
San Antonio had 329 yards on offense. Quarterback Chase Garbers completed 16 of 23 passes (70%) for 139 yards, and four carries for 10 yards. Quarterback Quinten Dormady completed 3 of 4 passes (75%) for 44 yards before leaving the game with an injury.
Wide receiver Jontre Kirklin completed one pass for 36 yards, and one touchdown. In the first quarter, San Antonio went with a trick play where Garbers threw the ball to Kirklin, who then threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Justin Smith for a 6-0 lead with 6:43 left.
Running back Anthony McFarland led the rushers with 15 carries for 82 yards, and six catches for 34 yards while Morgan Ellison had 12 carries for 30 yards and two touchdowns. In the second quarter, Ellison rushed for a one-yard touchdown making it 12-3 with 5:47 left. In the fourth quarter, Ellison scored a nine-yard touchdown for an 18-9 lead with 8:35 left in the game.
The rushers finished the afternoon with 33 carries for 127 yards, and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Jontre Kirklin made four catches for 66 yards and Justin Smith made four catches for 56 yards and one touchdown.
Kicker Ryan Santoso missed one field goal for 53 yards. San Antonio’s defense made 53 tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, one interception, four pass breakups, and one forced fumble.
Birmingham had 278 yards on offense. Quarterback Adrian Martinez completed 18 of 32 passes (56%) for 211 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and five carries for 56 yards. Martinez’s touchdown happened in the third quarter to Jace Sternberger for 15 yards cutting San Antonio’s lead down to 12-9 with 12:53 left.
Running back C.J. Marable had two carries for 17 yards. Birmingham’s rushers finished the game with 15 carries for 78 yards. Tight end Jace Sternberger led the receivers making seven catches for 110 yards, and one touchdown. The receivers finished the game making 18 catches for 211 yards, and one touchdown.
Kicker Ramiz Ahmed made one field goal for 34 yards. Birmingham’s defense made 70 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, two pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
