The NTT IndyCar Series was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday for the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500. The race was delayed for hours to due inclement weather and did not start until 4:40 pm Eastern Standard Time.

Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin started the race on the pole with his teammate Will Power starting second and Josef Newgarden third which made up the front row. It did not take long for chaos to unfold on the first lap when Marcus Ericsson, Tom Blomqvist, and Pietro Fittipaldi were involved in an accident at Turn 2 for the first caution of the race.

The crash was one of eight for the day. The other drivers that also brought cautions were Colton Herta, Katherine Legge, Marco Andretti, Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Felix Rosenqvist dashing their dreams of winning the Indianapolis 500.

NASCAR driver Kyle Larson, who started in fifth place, was issued a drive-through penalty for speeding on pit road on lap 134 ending his chances of winning the 500. Larson ended up finishing in 18th place.

The race came down to Josef Newgarden and Pato O’Ward with less than five laps to go. On the last lap, Newgarden passed O’Ward from the outside of Turn 3 to win his second consecutive Indianapolis 500 by 0.3417 seconds.

Newgarden became the first back-to-back winner since Helio Castroneves in 2001-02. Newgarden led a total of 26 laps while Scott McLaughlin led the most laps (64). The rest of the top five finishers were Scott Dixon third, Alexander Rossi fourth, and Alex Palou fifth.
