Toronto Argonauts sign quarterback John Matocha

The Toronto Argonauts signed quarterback John Matocha on Monday.

John Matocha is five foot eleven and weighs 180 pounds. A native of Magnolia, Texas, Matocha went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft and attended the Denver Broncos rookie minicamp.

Collegiately, Matocha played four seasons at Colorado of Mines (2019, 2021-23) completing 1,193 of 1,701 passes (70%) for 15,006 yards, 162 touchdowns, 28 interceptions, 538 carries for 1,982 yards, 53 touchdowns, two catches for 18 yards, one touchdown, and one tackle (1 solo) in 57 games for the Orediggers.

In 2023, Matocha completed 333 of 471 passes (71%) for 4,298 yards, 43 touchdowns, seven interceptions, 106 carries for 449 yards, and five touchdowns in 15 games. He was named the Division II Academic All-American of the Year.  Matocha concluded a record-setting collegiate career as the all-time passing touchdowns leader (162) and total touchdowns responsible for (191).

He set the NCAA Division II records for career quarterback rating at 172.4, most career games with a touchdown pass at 55, ranked second all-time in D-II in total offensive yards (17,006), completion percentage (.701), and third in passing yards (15,006).

Matocha is a three-time First Team All-RMAC (2019, 2022-23), three-time RMAC Offensive Player of the Year (2021–2023), two-time Division II football Academic All-American (2021, 2022), RMAC Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2019, and the winner of the Harlon Hill Trophy in 2022.
