Calgary Stampeders sign WR Colton Hunchak, place WR Malik Henry on injured list

The Calgary Stampeders signed wide receiver Colton Hunchak, placed wide receiver Malik Henry on the six-game injured list, released offensive lineman Alexandre Marcoux, and placed wide receiver Maxim Malenfant on the retired list on Wednesday.

Colton Hunchak is five foot eleven and weighs 212 pounds. The 26-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, made seven catches for 59 yards in eight games for the Stampeders in 2023.

The Calgary Stampeders drafted Hunchak in the eighth round (73rd pick) in the 2018 CFL Draft. In four seasons in Calgary, Hunchak made 45 catches for 606 yards, and one kick return for 17 yards in 50 games.

Collegiately, Hunchak played four seasons at York University (2015-18) with 167 catches for 1,953 yards, 18 touchdowns, 14 carries for 37 yards, and three kick returns for 58 yards in 27 games for the Lions. During his senior year, he finished fourth overall in the OUA in receptions (58), eighth in receiving yards (610), and tied for third in touchdowns (6).

He was a two-time OUA Second-Team All-Star. In addition, Hunchak was a three-time provincial All-Star at Notre Dame High School (Calgary, Alberta), and won the silver medal with Team Canada at the 2014 U19 world junior championships in Kuwait.

Malik Henry is six foot and weighs 179 pounds. The 27-year-old from Tifton, Georgia, made 14 catches for 228 yards, and one touchdown in three games before he missed the rest of the 2023 season when he ruptured his Achilles against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Before the CFL, the San Francisco 49ers signed Henry as an undrafted free agent. He cut in training camp but was brought back to the practice squad. However, he was released again and signed with the Indianapolis Colts. After the Colts released him, Henry signed with the New Orleans Saints before being released in October 2020.

The Calgary Stampeders signed Henry on January 25, 2021. In three seasons, Henry had made 87 catches for 1,375 yards, 11 touchdowns, five carries for 17 yards, and 21 kick returns for 513 yards in 25 games. In 2022, Henry made 62 catches for 1,023 yards, eight touchdowns, and two carries for eight yards in 13 games for the Stampeders on his way to being named a CFL West All-Star.

Collegiately, Henry played three seasons at Georgia Southern (2015-17) with 24 catches for 355 yards, one touchdown, two carries for eight yards, and 18 kick returns for 382 yards in 29 games for the Eagles. Then, Henry transferred to West Georgia in 2018 making 30 catches for 407 yards, seven touchdowns, one kick return for 23 yards, 14 punt returns for 253 yards, one touchdown, and one tackle (1 solo) in nine games for the Wolves.

Alexandre Marcoux is six foot two and weighs 295 pounds. The 26-year-old from Levis, Quebec, was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in the fourth round (33rd pick) of the 2023 CFL Draft. The Stampeders released Marcoux on June 3, 2023, and later re-signed him on November 20, 2023.

Collegiately, Marcoux played five seasons at McGill University (2018-19, 2021-23) playing left guard in 36 games for the Redbirds. In 2022, the Redbirds averaged 254.38 yards passing, 146.1 yards per game, and 368.3 average yards per game.

Maxim Malenfant is five foot ten and weighs 190 pounds. The 25-year-old from Drummondville, Quebec, signed with the Calgary Stampeders on May 2, 2024. He was not in the lineup for Calgary’s preseason opener against the B.C. Lions last Saturday.

In 2023, Malenfant made 29 catches for 266 yards, three touchdowns, three carries for 18 yards, one kick return for 16 yards, and three tackles (2 solo, 1 assist) in eight games for the Ottawa Gee-Gees. He led the Gee-Gees with three touchdown catches and finished second on the team in receptions (29) and receiving yards (266).

Malenfant played four seasons at the University of Ottawa (2019, 2021-23) making 37 catches for 404 yards, three touchdowns, three carries for 18 yards, seven kick returns for 111 yards, five punt returns for 82 yards, and 10 tackles (8 solo, 2 assists) in 26 games for the Gee-Gees. He was named a two-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian.
