Scott Dixon wins a chaotic Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix

The NTT IndyCar Series concluded the weekend on the streets of Detroit, Michigan, for Sunday’s Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix. Andretti Global driver Colton Herta started the race on the pole with Chip Ganassi Racing driver Alex Palou starting second.

Colton Herta led 33 laps before he made a pit stop on lap 34. However, eight laps later, Herta made contact on lap 46 with Tristan Vautier. Herta fell a lap down and finished 19th place. Josef Newgarden led a lap, followed by Christian Lundgaard leading six laps before Kyle Kirkwood took over the lead on lap 41. Kirkwood led a total of 24 laps.

There were eight cautions throughout the race. Among the cautions was a pileup on the first lap at turn three featuring Will Power, Pato O’Ward, Alexander Rossi, Linus Lundqvist, Santino Ferrucci, Jack Harvey, and Tristan Vautier.

Next, Kyffin Simpson hit Santino Ferrucci before Ferrucci hit Helio Castroneves at turn five on lap 16. The last caution came out on lap 70 when Alex Palou and Josef Newgarden made contact at turn three. In addition, there were 11 penalties with four of them on Will Power.

After Alex Palou led lap 65, Chip Ganassi Racing driver Scott Dixon took over and the final 35 laps to win his second race of the season beating Marcus Ericsson by .8567 seconds. It was his 58th career IndyCar win and is now nine away from tying Mario Andretti (67). The rest of the top five finishers were Marcus Armstrong third, Kyle Kirkwood fourth, and Alexander Rossi fifth.
