Report: Los Angeles Chargers sign Arlington Renegades QB Luis Perez

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to sign Arlington Renegades quarterback Luis Perez on Tuesday according to the X account UFL Analyst. The Renegades retain Perez’s rights should he return to the UFL.

Luis Perez is six foot three and weighs 220 pounds. The 29-year-old from San Diego, California, completed 225 of 336 passes (67%) for 2,309 yards, 18 touchdowns, four interceptions, and seven carries for 16 yards in 10 games for the Arlington Renegades in 2024. Perez led the league in passing yards, completions, completion percentage, and touchdowns.

Perez signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and was placed on the practice squad. In 2019, Perez played for the Birmingham Iron (AAF) completing 135 of 258 passes (52.3%) for 1,461 yards, 5 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and 7 carries for 24 yards in eight games before the league ceased operations.

Shortly after the AAF folded, Perez spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions. In 2020, Perez was drafted by the Los Angeles Wildcats (XFL) but was traded to the New York Guardians. He completed 38 of 61 passes (62.3%) for 418 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception, and 4 carries for 20 yards in five games before the league shut down in 2020 due to the pandemic.

In 2021, Perez played for the Jousters (TSL) completing 56 of 94 passes (59.6%) for 655 yards, 7 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, and 4 carries for 36 yards in six games leading the Jousters to the Mega Bowl in a loss to the Linemen.

Then, the New Jersey Generals (USFL) signed Perez on April 1, 2022. He completed 124 of 173 passes (71.7%) for 1,200 yards, 9 touchdowns 1 interception, 12 carries for -11 yards, and 1 touchdown in nine games leading the Generals to the North Divisional title but they would lose the North Divisional semifinals against the Philadelphia Stars.

Perez started the season with the Vegas Vipers (XFL) completing 79 of 121 passes (65.3%) for 900 yards, 8 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, and 5 carries for 26 yards in six games.

Next, the Vipers traded Perez to the Arlington Renegades. Perez completed 69 of 102 passes (67.6%) for 730 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and 8 carries for 35 yards in three games. In the XFL playoffs, Perez completed 45 of 63 passes (71.4%) for 577 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions in two games leading the Renegades to win the XFL Championship over the D.C. Defenders.

Collegiately, Perez played two seasons at Southwestern College (2013-14) completing 242 of 360 passes (67.2%) for 2,234 yards, 23 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 41 carries for -30 yards, and 1 touchdown in 16 games for the Jaguars.

Then, he transferred to Texas A&M University-Commerce (2016-17) completing 665 of 985 passes (68%) for 78 touchdowns, 16 interceptions, 56 carries for -87 yards, 1 touchdown, and punted the ball one time for 33 yards in 28 games for the Lions.

Perez finished as the all-time leader in completions (665), passing yards (8,325), and passing touchdowns (78). In addition, he helped the Lions win the 2017 National Championship, two playoff appearances, and one Lone Star Conference Championship.
